CCKW-352 U.S.A. W-454317-PEARL HARBOR?

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Dec 07, 2014 5:46 am

Not as many Pearl Harbor Veterans around as there used to be. There will be ceremonies around the USA to mark this day in history, my CCKW was made in May 1941, it is a true WWII Veteran, if only it could speak.
I'll pay the CCKW a visit to remember this day, I have added a new Veteran to the passenger door, CWO Joseph DeRoche. CWO DeRoche started as a stable boy with the Maine National Guard in 1935 and retired as the Maintenance Officer for the same organization 41 years later. Joe was on stateside active duty on December 7, 1941 and was a member the 152nd Field Artillery that was activated by President Roosevelt during the Spring of 1941 and spent 1942-1945 island hopping with the 43rd Division in the South Pacific.
This CCKW along with Joe were in the Army on December 7, 1941, I wonder what they were doing?

Joel,
Curious about the reason for 28th ID/229th FA on the bumper? Is there a family or friend association? My great-grandfather, grandfather, father and I all served in the 28th or ancestor units (Span-Am War).

My Uncle Joe was a WWII Ranger who was part of the Cadre when the 2nd Army Ranger School was formed at Camp Forrest, not all WWII Rangers served in Ranger units, many were assigned to Infantry units to provide training, leadership and recon capability. Uncle Joe was first assigned to the 28th Div. 110th Infantry Regiment, hence the markings for the artillery, and his last assignment was the 106th Division during the Battle of the Bulge.
I have his rare 2nd Army Ranger Training Handbook from Camp Forrest.

It is now December 7th 1941 +75 years. If only this truck could talk, am sure it would have a story to tell. I will go out this forenoon and have a seat in the CCKW to spend a quiet moment remembering those who were there at Pearl Harbor.
I knew a few who were there at Pearl Harbor and fortunate enough over the years since WWII to personally know most of those in the local 152nd Field Artillery Battery who were activated in the spring of 1941. They are nearly all gone now, WO DeRoche would be 100 now, and my Uncle Joe would be 98.
There will be a noontime ceremony with Pearl Harbor Veterans in attendance, a guest speaker, possibly the Adjutant General and a wreath will be tossed into the Penobscot River from a bridge. The Penobscot exits into the Atlantic, and there are WWII stories from locals of Germans, possibly submariners, coming ashore and purchasing items from local general stores. Two German spies did land at Hancock Point and were subsequently caught.

The CCKW is still in fighting condition and time seemed to have stood still so that it could stand as a monument to those who fought during World War Two.

CWO Joe DeRoche was well known in the community, having his name printed on the CCKW door brings back memories to many who see and appreciate this little token of appreciation even 30 years after his passing.

What an inspiring tribute. Nice to see true heroes recognized and not the fake idiotic ones on the ball field.

Joe served in the 152nd Field Artillery and was given the honor of firing the 75MM Howitzer salute on Governor's Day at annual training. Joe reminded me of Conductor Arthur Fiedler''s Boston Pops 4th of July performance with his body English as he touched off the cannon.

The U.S.A. Registration Number of my CCKW is U.S.A. 454317. I was doing a little searching about Battery A 152nd Field Artillery Bn during WWII. It was from Maine, activated early in 1941, and island hopped thru the Pacific from 42-45.
I discovered a photo of a SWB CCKW belonging to Battery A, 152nd Field Artillery with the U.S.A. W - 454366, mine is U.S.A. W- 454317, that's only 49 CCKW's away from mine. "Close" only counts in horseshoes.

Pearl Harbor plus 80 years, if only CCKW USA 454317 could talk, it had already been serving in the US Army for 7 months.
CCKW production began at the end of 1940.
