Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Justin,
Bugger that it wasnt a fluke and it was your truck! I will slowly look by serial, but it will take me along time i`m sorry.
In answer to your question, in the Australian army, the serial number has no relevance to the number painted onto the vehicle- in fact, there is very little logic as to what number is painted on in relation to the vehicle type or age! The only constant is very early stuff generally is in the lower numbered ledger books and later stuff (landy's etc) is in the higher numbered books, but even that is a vague and no means hard and fast rule!!! I found new M113 carriers listed in the same book as ww2 new Diamond T trucks.
If you happen to find more numbers, do post them up (even if partial numbers) and I will look them up for you and see if it is the ARN.
Cheers,
Ian.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
I'm back again. It's been a while, but finally I have some more time to work on the old girl.
I bought some new 3mm flat sheet metal and have started replacing the sections I cut out more than 12mths ago. Honestly I am very happy how they turned out considering it's the first time I have done sheet metal repairs. Most things I have done while cane farming were a lot bigger and a lot thicker metal to play with.
It's also the first time i have ever used 4" flapper/sanding disc. All I can say it WOW..........so much smoother than a normal grinding disc. Well I used the grinding disc first and then went onto the flapper disc.
I have attached some photo......what's everyone's opinion.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Still going. The harder I look the more small sections of rust I find in the tray. Luckily the tray is 3mm plus thick steel which is making it easier to fix, but OMG.
This is going to take considerably longer than I expected to finish this tray. But I'm having fun doing it and it's a good escape from the stresses of work.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Another week goes by, and more time spend on rust repairs. I seriously thought I would get over doing it, but I think just working on the truck is a very good escape from work issues and stress.
My welding and repair work is getting better all the time. I have attached more photos of the repairs to one of the cross bearers. Several other will need to be fixed as well.

Hi Justin,
Good to see the therapeutic work steadily progressing. The heavier steel is very good to start learning how to do the rust repairs. It is a lot to do with heat control, as you have learned.
Like you, I achieve a great deal of satisfaction in taking an unserviceable part and returning it to like-new condition. Many people (particularly women, I find) cannot understand this.
Your comment about getting better at it made me chuckle, as I occasionally see a repair I did years ago that is well below the standard of what I do now days!!
The process is an end in itself. Enjoy!!!
Seasons greetings from southern Queensland.
Sam.

You are correct Sam, the wife cannot understand why sanding, grinding, cutting, and welding calms me down and keeps me sane. She thinks i am totally crazy.
I am having more fun now then ever before. And as everyone tells me. .......measure twice, cut once.
I will continue plugging away, bit by bit and I will get it done.
Merry Christmas Sth Qld and everyone on G503.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hello Justin,
I hope you and your Family had a Merry Christmas !!!!!
You are doing a great job with your GMC CCKW !!
I am very interested in your process, as I have a old French return Tipper here in Florida, that is very rusted out, and the bed has similar issues
as yours, but many, many more areas of concern !
I was wondering on your front bumper, if that unit marking could be 1-X at the left, which would signify the 1st infantry Division, the Big Red One.
It looks like it could be a possibility looking at the photo.
If the numbers are still there, a flat push blade razor scraper would work good to slowly scrape away any OD paint covering the numbers.
It would give you your trucks history, which is a Rare Thing these many years after WW2 !!!
You seem to have many markings, so many leads are there to discover, and an excellent truck !!
Keep up your good work, and post more pictures when you can !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hello Justin,
Also......carefully HAND scrape the rear bumperettes, as the USA unit markings are very likely there !!!!!!!
Do not grind them with a sander !!
Being it is an ex-Norwegian truck, they seem to have always painted right over the US markings,
as opposed to sanding them off first before painting.
You could have everything right there on the rear bumpers as well as the front bumper.
they marked them in the front and rear.
Division would have been marked on the left side one.
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Justin,
The number that is on the rear tailgate is the USA number that would also be painted on the hood sides.
If you can make it out anymore, that would help, but several numbers can be seen.
Try carefully by hand, scraping remaining cover paint away from edges of numbers that remain, to identify the numerals.
I am sure some CCKW gurus can come up with your possible number based on what you have, as possibly from the frame serial number.
I have not researched the CCKWs enough to know yet the USA hood numbering based on serial numbers.

Hi Ray,
I spend some time with a razor blade on the rear bumpers and found this on the drivers side rear one.
To me it looks like a C26.
Anyway let me know your thoughts.
Cheers

Hello,
Wow !!!!! You have hit pay dirt !!!
BINGO !!!!!!!!!!!
The Big Red One is it !!!!!
The 1st Infantry Division had 3 Regiments .......the 16th, 18th, and 26th !!!
You have a truck that served with the 1st Infantry Division, and belonged to C Company of the 26th Infantry Regiment !!!!!
Beautiful discovery any way you look at it !!!!!! Very exciting !!!!!!!
The 1st Infantry Division WAS the first wave on Omaha Beach on June 6th, 1944
They also fought across North Africa, and Sicily, then Normandy, across France and into the Huertgen Forest and further into Germany !!
The Division had over 20,500 casualties, Incredible fighting history in WW2 !!!!

You have done well,
I thought that the front bumper said 1-X, for the 1st Infantry Division !
Best Wishes for the New Year !!
Keep us updated , you may now want to watch the movie, The Big Red One , with Lee Marvin

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Everyone,
Got some more photos , 1 of the passenger rear bumper and one more of the rust sections being cut out.
You can see that one of the main reasons that the steel tray rust in between the bearers and the top tray is because they are on spot welded onto the top tray section. By doing that is is allowing mud, dirt, sand and water between the two panels and then in turn creating an easy place for rust to start. It looks like I will have to cut a section out like the one I have posted over the top of each bearer to clean dirt and whatever rust lies beneath.
After I cut out the section of panel out you can see all the built up dirt and sand there. Who knows, some very small part could possible be from way back in WW2. Places like Omaha Beach, Bastogne or somewhere near the Siegfried Line. Anyway good to dream about it....lol.
The numbers on the passenger rear bumper are hard to read. Looks like 6A on the top row and 6_ R on the bottom.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hello,
Great pics, I can not make out what the new numbers might be.
Maybe studying some pics of 1st Division trucks, but is there a 1-X under there ?
Some more front bumper work where that 1-X looks to be may be best.
The C-26 looks like it should for C Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, but usually would be on passenger side bumperette.
It is also clearly marked.
The new pics seem to have 2 layers of markings.
Keep up your great work on this beautiful CCKW !!!!!!

Hi Ray,
The bumper that has the C26 is definitely original markings. The latest post of the other side looks to have been changed over time. Because it has a couple of small marks and dints on it, it's making it hard to scrap paint.
I might have gotten hold of the original importer of the GMC here in Australia. I'm hoping he has photos of when first arrived.
Like i said i am desperate for the bonnet numbers amd whatever other marking it had.
Cheers
