Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Justin,
The primer color on the frame on my 41 Chevy was also black, but the axles and transfer case were primed with red oxide. I don't know if it is a GM thing or not, but at least Chevy's all seem the same. Personally, I like a primer color that contrasts with the final color so "missed" areas stand out better. Same goes for priming. I always have difficulty getting a good uniform gray primer coat on media blasted metal as the color of the gray primer and the blasted metal are too close to one another.
What type of primer are you planning to use?
Your project looks good and you seem to be progressing well.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Paul,
Now after reading your reply I am not sure....lol. I was going to go grey but I can see your point. Once the body has been either sanded to sand blasted, grey might not be a good enough colour as you might miss some of the bare steel.
I have bought a spray tin today of just basic grey primer to put over the areas where I am cutting out the stake pockets. I am hoping to have another couple of them removed tomorrow and all of them done by next weekend. Just depends on work.
It is so hot here now. Was 34 degrees again today with about 80+ % humidity. Just a killer. I think while pressure washing the truck yesterday and doing just the one stake pocket I drank more than 1.5 litres of water. And the monsoon and Cyclone season is here now. So when we get really heavy rain normally the shed gets water inside it so that might slow me down a little.
I am really keen to get into it. I would like to have the tray done and dusted by the end of the month but they will depend on VOV and how long freight takes to get to Australia. The rear tailgate needs to be straightened as well. And the floor of the rear tool box is rusted as well. So I will need to replace it too.
Cheers

Justin,
You may want to consider an epoxy primer as they have great anti corrosion characteristics, much better than any top coat you will most likely be using.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Well I did some more cutting and grinding the Sunday night and here are some results.
Once the front Stake pockets were removed the rust did not look as bad. But here are some photos.
3 Pockets down, 5 to go. But who's counting...lol
Cheers

Hey Justin, I have been following your thread too. You have a great looking truck. Thanks for the compliment on my thread. Yes, everything looks so much better with green paint on it. Keep up the great work mate!

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Thanks John,
Any feedback is great to hear. Especially when you are in the shed by yourself doing the work. I have a long way to go on my GMC. But reading your thread , and everyone else's thread always keeps me going.
And I liked your idea of lifting the Chassis up with forklifts at either end to paint underneath. I was thinking of how I was going to clean, sandblast and paint it correctly. So seeing that is a great idea. I have one forklift at home and several at work if I need to borrow more.
Again, thanks for your nice comments.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi,
When I was doing these pockets on the wrecker, I made the mistake of folding each one individually.
Next time, I will get a good length folded up, plenty to do the whole truck, then cut off the individual pieces as I go.
Much cheaper, quicker and easier to be accurate.
(Yes, I know, the wrecker doesn't have actual pockets.)
Sam, in Childers.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Sam,
I have decided to get the correct units from Vehicles of Victory. I do not know anyone up this way, Cairns, that can accurately fold double walled stake pockets. I did mention it to one sheet metal place in Cairns, but once I described to him what I needed the price just went up and up and up.
The ones from VOV, are exact, and look like original units.
BTW, your restoration on the Diamond T969 is absolutely sensational. I have been following it for a while. I just wish I could reproduce panels the way you have.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Thanks for the comment, Justin. Appreciated.
I didn't realize they were a double walled unit. I suppose they need the strength to hold the troop seats from moving.
The ones I made are just strengthening ribs, single thickness of 16g = 1.6mm.
I am very very fortunate in having contacts in the industry and the freedom that comes with a small town.
I lived in the Cairns area, Gordonvale and Kanimblia for a year, then Cooktown, about 20 years ago. Still got mates there.
Shared a house with Martin Ryan for a while. Good bloke.
Work has kept me from doing anything much worth posting for a while, and this year doesn't look much better.
However, thanks for taking the time/effort to post your progress. It is, I'm sure, mutually encouraging to all of us who are "on the tools".
Have a nice day.
Sam.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Hi Sam,
I actually live in Gordonvale, well Aloomba really. My family has been around in Gordonvale area since the 50-60's. They used to own the Central Hotel pub years ago.
And this GMC is one of Martin Ryan's ex trucks. Martin and I get on very well.
Thanks for your comments as well. If I had my way I would work on the GMC every day after work and all weekend. But with a 3 yr old girl a 6mth old boy it makes it hard.
Looking forward to see more of your Diamond T on the G when you get time.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Wow, small world!!
I have a mate who used to live near Aloomba, his kids went to the school there. I used to stay there on holiday visits when living elsewhere.
I remember the sad passing of a well respected MJCQInc member some years ago when I was club editor, and I think he was at Aloomba. Related to you?
Ahh. Kids! They come a country mile first. And rightly so.
I don't have any kids (sadly), the MVs would hardly get a look if I did.
Sam.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Another couple of hours spent cutting and grinding today.
All side and front stake pockets now removed. Easier than expected to be honest.
Some photos attached.
Also played with my new sand blaster as well. Does a great job but, and the finish be so much better. But it's going to be very slow going with it. I was thinking that I might cut out all the rust and sand back what I can and then take it to the sand blasters who can do the final job. What everyone's thoughts ?
The RHF stake pocket looks like it might have been lead wiped at some stage. Just looks funny once it was cut out.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Some more work done yesterday on the front of the GMC Tray.
After removing all stake pockets you can easily see why they all rust, there is absolutely no primers between the stake pockets and the sides of the trays. Obliviously weather has a lot to do with it, but without primer, bare steel on bare steel is going to rust every time.
It is summer over here now and it was 35' C here yesterday with about 85% humidity. Talk about hot work cutting and grinding.
The Stake Pocket have been order from Vehicles of Victory and should be here in about 10 days. Looking forward to seeing them in person.
Anyway here is some photos from yesterday afternoon.
