Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Many of the Steel Cargo bodied CCKW's supplied to European Nations in the 50's-60's have had the stake pockets replaced during the reconditioning process at the Army Depots.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
I am not sure if these have been previously replaced but they have certainly been butchered when trying to fix them.
Whoever did the job years and years ago did a terrible job.

Originals are spot welded, mine is one of those that the replacement pockets were stick welded which are typical of depot repaired steel body.

Mine are spot welded. So must be original. But shocking job done whoever tried to repair them.
It will be a different looking tray once the new ones arrive from Vehicles of Victory. It made the tray look worse than what is actually is.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
This time it was the LHF Corner I needed to cut.
Looked bad on first cut, but once cut and cleaned it did not look too bad,,,,,,,,,,well kinda a little.

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
And now it was RHR Corner.
It is one of the most butchered ones on the whole tray. It has been plated and welded everywhere.
I will have cut some more of the corner higher up but here is was I have done so far.

Stake Pockets Rear
Would anyone have some close up LH & RH rear original stake or restored tray stake pocket photos ?
Mine has been butchered badly that I want to make sure when restoring it I want to make it correct.
Regards
Justin

Some Number found
Did some sanding today.
Was not in the mood for cutting and grinding so I decided to sand some paint and see if I got some numbers.
I got to sand one side of the bonnet, Driver side, and found nothing. But I sanded the middle of the tailgate and this is what I found.
Looks to me as USA 5_873_
But what do everyone think ?
Also found some numbers on the front bumper, but cannot read it.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
Dear Dave,
Thanks heaps for the pics. It will make it easier.
If I am not asking too much could I get a photo of the Tailgate closed. I think someone has butchered with the hook goes into mine as well. Basically when I close my tailgate the is nothing stopping the tailgate from dropping down once you start driving.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
I'm Back.
Sorry for the delay, between being sick, away for work, throwing out a disc in my back, and massive rain, I just have not had time to touch the GMC.
With all the stake pockets removed it was time to start cutting out the area's of rust behind the stake pockets. Only if the US Army had of used primer behind the pockets before they spot welded them on. It would have save me and everyone else who has ever rebuilt or restored a GMC or Studebaker a lot of time.
I must also thank Vehicles of Victory..................... my new stake pockets arrived several weeks ago. They look sensational. And Theirry from France for the NOS speedo cables.
I started today on the RHF stake pocket rust cutting. The cutting was the easy bit, but grinding out the section attached to the inner floor section took at least an hour. I wanted to keep the original floor intact as much as possible. So you can see by the photos the inner lip of the floor is still there after I removed the rusted section.
I have added a photo of what it looked like just after I removed the stake pocket weeks ago.
Cheers

Re: CCKW Nth QLD Australia
I did some more cutting over the weekend and here are the results.
All the RH Side stake pocket rust section have now been removed, sand blaster and spray with some Wurth Weld Through Primer. Like I said the other day. Cutting seems to be the easy bit. But the grinding and finishing of the cutting is taking the longest. Especially with the ones over the underneath load bearers. To cut around, and then remove all the rust and clean it up is just taking so long.
I also started to cut more out the RHR stake pocket. You will see from the photos that I had to remove the whole outer section to get to the rusted piece underneath.
Regards
Justin
