Here is a photo that is a little more clear. This is when we were first taking the truck apart. I regret to say that I neglected to cover the stencil, and it seriously faded in the ocean air.
Joel is correct about the reference to depot work being performed. All three axles and the transfer case have depot rebuild tags on them dating back to June of 1951. My best guess would be that the trans. was rehabbed back in Sept. '50 and then put into stock to await installation into a truck.
I will make another stencil of the date and apply it to the trans. again. I figure this will be acceptable since the rest of the paint on the truck is being replaced too.

Europeans often place the day ahead of the month when writing dates.

Enjoying watching the progress on this truck.

Remember to use a pale yellow which is so common to the trucks used in postwar Europe.

Roy, Thanks for clearing up the date code for me. I didn't know. That means that the trans. was rehabbed 09 April, 1950. By the way, I love all your photos that you have posted. And Joel, thanks for the tip on the proper color yellow.
I will have the entire trans. back together this Sat. and I have many more photos to share. Look for a separate thread regarding the oil seals for the P.T.O. trans. I think it will be good reference material for those who would like to use the neoprene seals.
I am doing the best I can out of respect and memory of the WW2 Manufacturers Assemblers, Drivers and Mechanics who had to build and keep these rigs rolling. I hope that I am not making anyone 'roll over in their grave'. :)

How many of you guys, besides me, have tried to hang this heavy P.T.O. while the trans. is IN the truck. I can tell you that this way is by far the easiest.

New gasket for the inspection cover.

It is important that this steel bushing is installed before the output companion flange is. It keeps the rear output bearing from 'walking' out of place.

Almost finished with the trans. I have just a few more items to bolt back in place, then she'll be ready to be installed behind the engine.

Well Boys, I have been quite busy with little fiddly bits and parts. I haven't taken any photos of progress for a while.
I want to take the time to thank Keith at Kenny's Sandblasting in So. El Monte Ca. for doing a great job with all of our sandblasting needs. I also want to thank the boys over at Nate Jones Tires of Signal Hill Ca. They helped in removing the old rubber from these wheels, which I was told took a lot of work. For all your antique tire needs, they are the ones to see!

Ready for Rubber!!!
Image

I believe the 1st. five digits are the manufacturers I.D. number, however I am not sure about this. I do know for certain that 5 & 1/8 denotes the width of the wheel measured at the bottom of the ring and wheel lip. The last three digits are of course month and year.
I was schooled by an old WW2 tire and wheel mechanic, Dave Arnson who owned Everwear Tires in Los Angeles, on the proper way to measure wheels for new tires, and which width wheels are correct for specific tires. Dave would not sell any tires to me unless I learned this correct procedure. He told me, "I want a repeat customer, I don't want to go to a funeral because you wouldn't listen!". With over 40 removals and installations under my belt, I am glad to say that I listened.

JS, thanks for posting the nice pix of you girl. She's beautiful. Can you do us a favor and take one of the cigarette ash tray in the open position? If these two trucks are that close in serial numbers, then yours should have one too.

What looks neat on a nice restored 1st Series Closed Cab are the Blue Louvered Marker Lights. The parts to convert the B.O. Markers are available thru M.V. Spares and they look nice even if you choose to leave the tail Lamps conventional. I did my 1st Series SWB and am pleased with the "look". Plus you can sell your take off "cats eyes" for $20-$35 apiece to defer the cost.

Apart from the wire loop handle in place of a plastic one the ashtray looks to be identical to that used in civilian Chev trucks of the era. The wire loop may be a field repair, the plastic was a bit flimsy.

This is a excellent restoration thread, I would very much like to know more about the early braking system vacuum actuator and the other valve that connects to the brake pedal via the rod. Did these units have to be rebuilt ?
I am unable to find any information with regards to the early braking system in any of the TMs
What is the dia of the brake pipes from the master cyclinder ?
Any help appreciated with answers to the above as I need to tackle this braking system on a swb
