CCKW CLOSED CAB DRIVERS VIEW 2013/2018

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Apr 14, 2013 4:31 am

Spring has sprung, I couldn't resist the urge to take a spin to wake up the CCKW. She's pointed out the yard, all warmed up, and eager to go.
A birds eye view of what a Closed Cab CCKW driver sees. Watch out for snipers! The Closed Cab driver has a better view over the steering wheel than in the Open cab as the Closed Cab driver is seated about 6" higher.
The view over the down sloping hood was an important frature of the Closed Cab CCKW design, but was soon gone with the Open Cab with bench seats that were too low. Many Open Cab CCKW drivers are looking at the road thru the steering wheel, and the view over the hood is hidden by the dashboard. Only drawback as far as drivers view is concerned is that the view of those lined up on the reviewing stand at the local parade is a bit harder to see in a closed cab than it is in an open cab.
Note the gauges, healthy CCKW's will carry good 40#+ idle oil pressure. The fuel sender is having problems, I do have a NOS spare, but carry a special dip stick to check the tank as do many CCKW owners.

Anyone notice any "Clutch Head" screws?

Love that TM9 Blue Drab!
I topped of the tank back in November with 15 gallons of Hi Test and treated it with Sea Foam in lieu of STABIL as an experiment. The trip up a steep hill told me that the fuel has soured some. Fresh fuel will make a difference.
Soon as we get 60F sunshiny days, the annual Spring PM will take place.
The PM this year also includes balancing tires that have not been previously balanced and installation of the NOS GI Issue 3rd Series Hydrovac Kit. Bendix made up a CCKW installation kit for the 3rd Series Hydrovac that included new Vacuum Hose, prefabed tubing, brackets, and hardware which makes the change a several hour fun job. And it was, the 3rd Series Hydrovac Kit was installed during August. It took around 3 hours, I kinda dubbed around while doing it and enjoyed every minute. The DOT 5 got a complete flush and new 3rd Series Bendix Hydrovac 374750 was power bled via the GI Issue bleeder. Using a pressure bleeder is more civil- no hollering at the wife.

The view out the closed cab windshield changes dramatically at night, the somewhat subdued light from wartime headlamps with the substitute reflector coating makes it easy to "over drive" the headlamps. Will try to get a night time pic using the digital camera.
I'm pretty proud of this CCKW, the voices of all the WWII veterans telling their CCKW war stories over the years all come back to me whenever I recall their names.

I have misplaced the information, but the source for the bright reflective coating in sealed beams had a more urgent need in the manufacture of other war material. The substitute coating resulted a duller finish that resulted in dimmer headlamps. Theduller appearance of the wartime sealed beam lens was quite apparent.

And thank you too, you had a hand in it. My speedometer was between 5 and 10 MPH too high due to gearing for the Civilian Speedometer, the correct drive gear fixed that.

There is no greater honor than to be the proud custodian of a great symbol of WWII. These MV's had so much to do with the wartime effort and so many WWII Veterans can relate to them.

THE VIEW IS CHANGING

Post by Joe Gopan » Mon Sep 08, 2014 3:44 am

Having a CCKW (or other WWII MV) is great fun they are a time warp and bring back personal memories for some of us who remember when these beasts roamed the streets as government property. They lend us a hint of what the WWII GI experienced while operating or riding as passengers. They are also a good source of new friends while stopped at the traffic light, an air show, a visit to the drive in restaurant, a stop at the gas station, etc.
There is an missing ingredient now becoming evident, the WWII Veteran, disappearing from the scene are the chance encounters at these stops is the occasional elderly lady at the corner grocery that remarks, "nice truck, I drove those at Boston Army Base during the war", or the Veterans that remark "I can't help but admire your Jeep, I worked on these in the shops at Dow Field back in the 40's", "I hauled ammo in the Alps in one of these", "We used to back up, and stop quick to unload the bombs", "I used to outrun Circle C Cowboys in my Jeep after the war", "We used to have to unwind the winch and clean the cable".
For some of us, the view is changing.

Really nice, Joel. I like the stories you tell along with it too.

Sensational looking CCKW Joe. I hope mine look half as good as that by the time I am finished.

Thanks again for your help with my CCKW.

Cheers
Justin
