Research the NTSB reports on Truck wheel failures for the past 40 years. A websearch of the topic of welding truck wheels is interesting.

Just another coverup

What does that have to do with the following fabrication?
Ben Dover wrote:The obituary columns have a few stories to tell of truck mechanics killed by wheels they have attempted to weld, one need to know no more than that, it is not worth it. The Budd Wheels used on large MV's are dangerous enough when new, why ask for trouble?
a search on "NTSB reports on Truck wheel failures" brings up absolutely nothing as does one "welding wheels repair" except bring up numerous reputable companies who do this type work.

I have seen videos and read reports about the dangers inherent in welding truck wheels. The danger does not necessarily come from welding on the wheel, but rather from doing so with a tire still on the rim when the welding was done(even deflated in some cases). There is a very unpredictable process (hypthermic??) which can result in an explosion. there are a number of training videos on youtube that illustrate this phenomenon<sp?>

here is one:

Moral of the story?? Don't attempt it with the tire on the rim! Repairs of a bare rim would depend on the skills of the welder, and the quality of the wheel being repaired.

There are more than several reasons for not reworking cracked, broken, damaged, wheels or components by welding, brazing, or heating, nor doing the same to pitted or corroded wheels.
Yes there are instances when Wheels are professionally repaired, but they are not returned tothe customer untill certified by a Professional Engineer (PE) or the manufacturer.
There are always always going to be " the experts" that shrug off wise information and claim "common sense", but that does not change the risk of a sudden wheel failure that results in injury or death.

When i had mine broken down the tire guy told me to keep the rings with each rim they came off of so i did. They cleaned up pretty but they came from out west.
