Whilst I might trust a N.O.S. radiator cap *, I sure as heck would not trust an original French letter - it is bound to be perished and unservicable.clintm20 wrote:Wonders of the internet I got an email from Beans McGuillicuddy III today. He is going thru some of his grandfathers stuff and wants to know what a crate of radiator caps are worth? He also has some letters. He says his grandad really loved France.

Re: Reo 10 Ton 6x6
Quite a co-incidence that after searching for the model number for the Reo 10 tonner for several years, Trucker posts this and within a few days I receive the same info from an entirely different source. A friend in Sweden sent me info from Reo documents at the University of Michigan stating that the 10 ton Naval Aircraft Wrecker was a model 50V, named for the 50,000 lb GVW. In the same document it is specifically stated that the equipment shall be the same as installed on the Sterling DDS-235. The engine was a Waukesha 145GK. Axles were Timken and the gearbox was Brown-Lipe 5 speed. Wheelbase 178".Trucker1973 wrote:Factory designation of Reo 10-ton Navy wrecker - Reo 50V.
Trucker's info came from Wheels and Tracks magazine #56 & 58, published about 1997 or so. Included was a photo of a 50V, said to belong to an unnamed collector in California. Does anyone know the whereabouts of this truck ?

Re: Reo 10 Ton 6x6
Hi Guys, I am the owner of the 10 ton Reo in California. It was built in March 7, 1945. It did not go overseas, so that is probably why there are no pictures of it service. It is a model 50V with Waukesha 145GK 6 cylinder gas engine. It has the Garwood hoist and Cleveland front air shocks. The wood is badly deteriated, and steel not much better. It also has the front axle removed and transfer case removed. I bought it in the 90's or so. Still looking for the front axle.

Sterling made the 10 Ton 6X6 Model DDS 235 Wrecker for the NAVY. It was used for aircraft salvage. I remember 3 of them offered by DRMO in the 60's.

Re: Reo 10 Ton 6x6
Its nice to finally track this Reo down. It looks pretty solid in the 90's, too bad it didn't stay that way. If you know the model numbers for the front end and transfer case someone may have them. I'm sure they were used in other trucks. The Sterling DDS235 had the identical engine and drivetrain.

The truck was rotted when I got it. I have kept it in sunny California, so no new wood rot or steel rot. I have driven it a while ago. Used a gallon coffee can and plumbed it into the carbureator. Ran just fine. Moved it from the front yard to the back yard. That is where the photo you have is from.

Could you post some pictures of the truck ? One of the data plate would be nice too. Has it been a California truck most of it's life ? I'm sure you know these are very rare trucks today.

I recall the trucks I mentioned being offered by DRMO being located at Naval Ammunition Plant, Crane, Indiana.
