CCKW RESTORATION AND THE PEANUT GALLERY

Post by Joe Gopan » Mon Jul 05, 2010 1:29 pm

The CCKW restoration is normally a"work in progress" that takes years to complete, very few restorers will find all the missing cosmetics the first time around, it can take 30 years to accumulate all of the little trinkets that go into the fine detailing. There are some very fine restorations out there, those who have endured their own restoration will have praise, those of the peanut gallery who have no CCKW to be proud of will be doing the nitpicking. Am i right?

Wrong, only people who have restored a CCKW will know or care if you have a french fender or that the stake pockets on the bed are the wrong shape, or that you're running european headlights. The rest of the MV world doesn't know at what serial a feature changed, or that the cab you have is wrong for your vin, and people outside the MV world only see a big green truck. So the "peanut gallery" that you mention is just chock full of other CCKW owners and restorers.

It is always exciting when a missng trinket arrives to be installed on 'Ol USA-454317. Thanks to Frank von Rosensteil, an NOS Air Cleaner Cover arrived to replace the missing one to my early CCKW Air Cleaner.
Early CCKW's had the Die Cast Carburetor which had the Air Cleaner attached with a clamp and a supporting brace to the cylinder head. My truck has an NOS Die Cast Carburetor with a special Zenith Factory Adaptor that clamps to the early diecast carburetor and allows the Late Air Cleaner normally used with the Cast Iron Carburetor to be installed.
Am looking forward to doing the changeover later this week along with before and after pics. I always enjoy adding one more missing piece of the CCKW puzzle to this ongoing 30 year restoration.

whats right or wrong is in the eyes of the truck owner, nothing wrong with being correct where i live no one knows the bed is wrong or i have 2 mirrors for safety .they just smile and wave and that makes it worth it.

What I found out doing some serious shows with my Ford Mustangs, which were top notch restorations, is the people that came up and pointed out "flaws" or wanted to argue over the length of a return spring, usually had no dog in the fight. When I asked where is yours so I can pick it over like you did mine, the normal response was, after some prodding, "in the garage in a million pieces", usually for years.
