Working on the Studebaker Long Road Almost Done
Well today was a productive day. After this weekend we took the cab completely off and and started working on the frame. The body is striped of all its innards and wiring. We do have some rust on the cab that I will have to deal with. But that should hopefully not be a problem as I have never welded before and this will be a first for me. Dont worry I have a friend who has restored over 10 cars and is a fabricator who is willing to teach me and show me the ways. I have ran into some problems though. When we took off the oil filter housing there was some metal pieces in the water neck. Well when I dug those out I found 4 of them. Looked at them and thought that something might have broken. Well I was right the propeller on the water pump has 8 fins on it and all are broken off. Is there any way to replace this propeller on the shaft?? The rest of the pump looks to be fine. We have the engine also ready to pull out and the bolts from the engine mounts are out. Anyone know where I can find the rubber mounts to replace these as these are pretty rotted out?? My next choir is to take the braking system apart and This thing looks like a PIA!!!!! I know that the Studebaker has its own type of braking system. Anyone out there could you please PM me and tell me how to do these brakes?? We are also trying to get the lugs off of the tires. Was able to get the passenger front tire off and take her down to the bearings they look good and the brakes are in pretty good shape on that side. But we are having problems getting the Drivers side front tire off as the square lugs do not want to turn but the nuts came off no problem. Any ideas on getting these off?? Well I know I have a lot of questions so I will end them for now.
Here are some pics of the project so far
This is what we started with
What the engine looks like
Starting to strip her down already took off the fenders and front end
Inside of the cab
Oh did this come with the truck or was it added later??
More tear down
Getting ready to remove the cab from the frame
Here is the frame with cab off
Thats it for now

I don't have all the Studebaker parts in the world but can help with some and and can also call you to help you thru some tasks. The undercarraige is similar to Split Axle GMC but has many differences. PM me your number and I will call you and try to help.

Yes they are but we are having problems getting the square nut lug off. This thing is locked up tighter that a vault. We have tried heating it and penetration oil.

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Oh I also would like to know what size tires I need for her as I need to get some beater ones. Mine are shreaded in the rear and the tubes blow out because of the damaged rubber. Anyone know where I can get some beater tires that i can use to move her around as it is a PIA to move a duece with 4 flats in the rear. These do not need to be new or even half way good. Just need something for her to sit on while moving her around.
Thanks
Ken

Re: Working on the Studebaker
I think that truck should have 7.50-20's ? possibly 8.25-20's ? . . . With some fresh tubes i bet what you got will hold air and roll just fine

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Ken,
A lot of older trucks used the same 6-bolt lug nut pattern, including the M35 6X6's. You may be able to find some used tire & wheel assemblies that you can just bolt on for rolling around.

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Howdy. I have found that if you need tires and don't have any extras already mounted, that by the time you find used ones, shipping, cleaning, new tubes & flaps, mounting, etc. you are over halfway there towards new ones.. Luckily, when I bought my G506 (thanks, Stu) it had 6 beater tires that were all up & 6 BFN tires, tubes & flaps. I mounted 2 of the new tires on my Ben Hur & 2 on the front of my Chevy, replacing the worst of the old tires. a couple were so dry=rotted you could see the air in them
I would suggest that you buy 2 new tires-tubes-flaps. Take your 2 best rims & clean them up real good, paint them OD, and you are on the way to restoration. Put them on the rear axle & you can at least move it around.
If the Stude will take Chevy rims, I have some extras, but I'm in Memphis & shipping would be huge.
I notice that you do seem to have a couple of passable tires that will probably hold air with a new tube & good cleaning. They are bad about rotting around the valve stems, etc. New tubes might get them up for a while.
Your heater may be an aftermarket, but it looks to be period correct. Very few of the WW2 trucks had heaters.
Hang in there on that Stude. It's sort of a rare Bird. I would love to have one. Thats what my friend/mechanic was gonna get before he had a stroke.
Keep us posted & if I can be of any help, just let me know

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Hi Ken,
To get the lug nuts with the square head off.. take a 3 lb sledge and hit them on the side flat a couple of times until you see them move slightly sideway and you should be able to spin them right off after that.
BTW the left side lugs are left hand thread, and ALL of the lug nuts are standard semi parts available at your local HD truck parts supply house. I would replace them all as the cost is not that much, and also put anti seize on them before reinstalling them.

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Some times you may have to heat them up, but don't over heat them to the point where it cause expansion of the stud inside

Re: Working on the Studebaker
Looks like a good start on a good truck.Always have liked the us6.When the inners are stuck bad we used to have one guy run the big rattle gun while the other guy would hit the socket on the side.HARD.The torque of the tool(make sure the compressor is pumped to the max) and the side hit would usually win the battle. As stated above --M-35 mounted wheels seem to be easy and cheap to get--they would get you rolling and then you'll have the chance to do the original ones real nice.

Re: Working on the Studebaker
The nice thing's about those era Stude's is you would have to be bound by the Mil-spec HMV tag's in WI as a regular joe could have ordered that very same 6x6 truck . . .
Yup it's true, you could have walked into the Studebaker dealer as regular civilian joe shmoe and asked for a brand new 6x6 truck and they would have sold you that very same truck
