YOU TOO CAN BE A CCKW MOTOR SERGEANT

Post by Joe Gopan » Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:08 am

All it takes is some mechanical ability, a few TM's, a good set of the many tools a large truck requires, a set of GI coveralls, a lot of attention to detail, and quality spare time spent inside and outside the truck looking for the little things and correcting them before they become a problem. I enjoy it as it brings back the good old army days. My old Motor Sergeants and instructors are still looking over my shoulders.

A little reminder to add a fewdrops of oil to the starter and generator oilers occasionally. The Distributors usually have a grease cup that is to be filled with CG or GAA, one complete turn every 1000 miles is sufficient. Some of the European returns may have a replacement distributor (Ducilier) made in Europe which has no oiler. The Ducilier is aluminun in color.

Check your CCKW wheels for the date. All wheels were stamped on the convex side within the bolt pattern with the Month and Day. Makes for interesting discovery.

A Motor Sergeant has deadline signs at his disposal, they are Red with yellow lettering, 18" X 6" wood or sheetmetal will do it. 1" or 2" lettering. Place them prominantly on the front of any vehicle that has been deadlined for whatever reason. We used to deadline trucks that had not had their Motor Stables check.

Have you serviced your Hydrovac per the LO? The updated Lub is now Permatex Hydraulic Jack Oil.

Hi,
All wheels were stamped on the convex side within the bolt pattern with the Month and Day.
My 4 ton wheels are stamped with (for example) "42" between one pair of lugnut holes and "5" between the next pair of holes. I always took that to be year and month. What do you think?

BTW, one of the stampings is always forty-something.

Have a nice day.
Sam.

Rare is the WWII 6X6 with date stamped Budd Wheels that all match or have the DOD of the truck.

When is the last time you checked your CCKW fan belt or added a drop of oil to the Generator. Have you checked the level in your master cylinder lately?

The CCKW Maintenance films sold by Vintage Video are a good investment. "Durable Jones" will set you straight.

Do not use 3/4" radiator or heater hose on the Hydrovac Vacuum lines.

There is a reason for the Army way, they want the MV operator to be aware that everything bolted between the front and rear bumper moves at the same time as the rest of the vehicle and functions 100% as intended. Lives depend on how well the vehicle is maintained. It's not hard to get used to.

US ARMY WHEELED VEHICLE MECHANIC....
Job training for a wheeled vehicle mechanic requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 13 weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instructions. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field.

Understand how system parts interact with one another. GOOD parts can then be established & the NOT GOOD problem/s part/s isolated for repair or replacement.

The Army has a reason for diligent maintenance that to many appears done too often, and appears a waste of time, and parts. The main thing is that the equipment is in top shape when it is needed due to all the PM and inspections. If the gee members could receive army training and parts back up such as the military has, there would be hardly any Jeeps waiting to be fixed
Army maintenance does work for those that collectors that do practice it.
