SO YOU WANT TO KNOW YOUR CCKW

Post by Joe Gopan » Thu Nov 05, 2009 8:15 pm

It doesn't come easy, the TM is the bible for maintenance, and it pays to own all the TM's printed starting with the TM10 for the CCKWX of 1941 thru the final CCKW TM9-801 of April 1944, having these on hand will give the CCKW enthusiast insight to the evolution of early thru late CCKW.
Most owners want to know the history and all of the little cosmetic details involving the evolution of the CCKW from the earliest 1st Series CCKWX thru the last 5th series CCKW of 1945, this is the most difficult part to learn when it comes to CCKWs as there are no comprehensive books on the subject.
Eager owners want to learn all there is about their CCKW in a hurry, and what they are seeking is not all under one book cover.
There are a few books that have been printed about CCKW, most have photos of both GI Issue trucks in wartime service and trucks that have been restored by postwar collectors, the mixture of the two can be misleading as new collectors are slow to recognize changes made by collectors or the mods made by post war foreign military users.
There are a couple of basic books that do give valuable insight to detail and historical fact concerning the CCKW and provide both old and new CCKW enthusiasts hours of interesting reading with plenty of photos to study. They are; "GMC CCKW-352/353" by Emile Becker and Guy Dentzer, and the Tankograd No. 6015 "U.S. WWII GMC CCKW-352 & 353 2 1/2 TON CARGO TRUCKS" by Michael Franz. Both are foreign origin, the Becker book is printed in French and German with a bit of English here and there, and the Franz book is printed in German and English. Regardless of the language, they both speak CCKW and are easy to understand.
I have had the Becker book about 20 years and it still gets read several times a week, the Tankograd book has been in my library nearly a year, the detailed photos of early and late CCKW Cargo trucks never get boring to study and something new is discovered each time I read it. These two books along with Bryce Sunderlin's excellent series on CCKW printed in the MVCC "Army Motors" will go a long way in helping the newcomer learn "CCKW".

For what it's worth, I have observed a copy of "GMC CCKW-352/353" in Bob Rubino's pickup truck when he is on road trips servicing MV collections.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Thye sad part about learning all there is about the CCKW is that the ranks of the WWII and Korean era Veterans who worked with the CCKW or were associated with them in combat are rapidly thinning out. Gone are the informal chats in anywhere USA by WWII veterans reminiscing about their WWII military life intermixed with anecdotal reference to experiences with Jeeps, CCKW's, GI chow, KP, training, leave, combat etc. The newer collectors are more or less left left to their imagination and pictures in books, it just ain't the same without the "guys who were there". All one had to do in the 40's-60's is have a Jeep or other type MV drive by the window of a room full of veterans and the stories would flow from young WWII veterans with their WWII service fresh in their minds.

Any new CCKW books show up?
Those of you who think you have mastered G-503 Jeeps should try on a CCKW for size. It is not just about repairs and doing all the cosmetics, there is another factor, it is the history and purpose of the vehicle you choose to restore. The veterans who drove these and the mechanics who drove them will give you insight, sadly, the ranks of WWII and Korean era veterans are thinning out. Some stories will stick in your mind forever, my ROTC instructor told of a Korean War incident where a burning CCKW with its rear suspension blown off was still being driven by the driver who was also on flame.

The Becker Books may be in French and German, but there is something universal about WWII MV's that allows most to understand the captions.

"The GMC CCKW TRUCK in U.S. Service" By David Doyle is a quantum leap in the study of the CCKW.

The time is right to consider one of the nice restored or semi restored CCKW's being offered with all the hard work done. They will go good with your Jeep. Be prepared to buy a few more shop tools tho and a little heavier lifting when doing the required work.

And you can carry the Jeep in the back... (LWB only)'

The Canadians made some nice 12 ft Alu and plywood units. If you get them, REMEMBER to lift them higher than necessary when pushing them into the cargo body. There are a coupe bolts sticking down that will stop it short and you will take the end of the ramp in the mouth...

At my annual Pearl Harbor Day display on the 7th, the local crowd gave me a roaring ovation when I loaded my wife's GPW into the back of my LWB cargo...

And Lloyd White's latest two books that are full of Bulletins and MWO's will be a great asset on your WWII CCKW.

When I was tall enough to "just see" across the CCKW floorboard, I used to envy all the relatives, customers and GI's who could just jump in a CCKW, turn the switch and fire off a CCKW. Years later when I was able to drive a CCKW I discovered it was not all that simple to just drive in and go as each truck has its' own particular quirks. Even when in NOS condition they will not instantly fire off at first attempt. One has to learn when to choke, when not to choke, when to pump, when not to pump etc. It takes time to become that good mix of man and machine, and some are better at it than most and sorry to say, some never do get there.

Note how close the parking Brake Lever is to the Transfer Case Levers, those of yoy with large hands can get bruised releasing the brake.
