CCKW FACTS AND TRIVIA

Post by Joe Gopan » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:26 pm

The Banjo type axles and Transfers were produced by Chevrolet.

Lumber requirements for wood cargo bodies were relaxed in order to use available lumber grades, fopr example, softwoods that would not be customarily approved.

Permanent Deep Water Fording provisions designed for the CCKW were not implemented in proction in 1945 due to the temination of production at war's end.

Rubber Wheel Cylinder caps were engineered for production in late 1945, but not incorporated due to end of production.

The Six-Valve Fuel Pump (flat top) was developed to reduce tendency to vapor lock.

The Insulated Hard Cab Enclosure for the Open cab and the Stewart Warner Gas fired heater were post WWII CCKW accessories.

You're right about the poorer wood quality as time went on, I think most restorers use better wood than what was really used.

Knots were ok as long as they were solid, worm holes were ok to an extent. I'd have to look up the rest as I don't remember it all, but they were using almost any wood.

Some CCKW Cargo models have Guide A-2 Oval Reflectors mounted on the rear Splash Guards. This feature does not show in the SNL's, there is WWII photographic evidence and close examination of Splash Guards having them will indicate the holes are factory punched and not drilled.

I believe there is evidence of this in the photos of the "Tankograd CCKW CARGO TRUCK" book.

This goes to show with all the differences, that during the war whatever the factory had on hand, they installed it on the truck. Main objective was to get trucks out the door. That is why it is not difficult to be "Historically Correct" when restoring WW2 vehicles. Will be posting pics of the next build. Chevrolet G7117.

There appears to have been some Closed Cab with Steel Cargo Bodies that left the factory with this feature. Have noticed it in WWII photos I have been observing this since the immediate post war period and on surplus trucks in the 50's. Have also had some NOS Splash Guards over the years that had holes for reflectors.

It appears that the majority of heater kits made for the CCKW ended up surplus while relatively few were installed during wartime. The Hot Water Heater Kit the CCKW showed up on many of the Airfield Refuelers surplused in the 50's.

One fact about the CCKW's that always amazed me was the fact that during production a new CCKW rolled off the assembly line every 3-4 minutes!!

The CCKW predates the MB/GPW.

I've seen two Closed Cab Chevrolet manufactured CCKW's that I can remember, and that was long before hobby caught on, we now look for these little details.
We know more about the Chevrolet manufactured CCKW's now thanks to David Doyle and his nice book.

I remember photos of a long wheelbase Chevrolet, basically CCKW length but only a single back axle, but I didn't know the Chevrolet division built CCKWs too.

Obviously not that common, hard cab / soft cab, early / late? I assume the data plate said Chevrolet then?

I have seen two Chevrolet manufactured Closed Cab CCKW's that belonged to a couple of our parts customers. David Doyle explains it in his book "THE GMC CCKW TRUCK", I can remember my folks questioning the owner about the Chevrolet 6X6. I got a chance to see the truck when we bought a CJ-2A from him with a NOS surplus GPW Engine. This was back in 1959.

CCKW fenders will interchange with those of G-506 Chevrolet 4X4. There is one difference tho, the CCKW fenders have a reinforcing plate or "doubler" under the first 3 or 4 " at the front.(where the headlamp portion of the radiator guard bolts to.
