Take it to a machine shop.
The starter works, the mechanical portion (gears) need rebuilding, this is a machinists job.
(given the rarity of the piece and doubt of finding any replacements (Soon/simply))

Their options:
- Rebuild the parts from scratch (mill out suitable gears for reinstallation on a mill, or reweld and repair the teeth and shaft end.
- Create an adapter plate to use a suitable alternative modern starter to bolt in place and engage the flywheel using the old piece as a pattern for run out, gear clearance and bolt pattern adapter plate if needed.

This is a machinists expertise, at least an old time machinist, not necessarily a CNC driver. There are plenty of hobby machinists in the Country as well using the older vertical and horizontal mills that have been basically dumped, to make parts that are one offs which would save Quid. (I would have typed $$$, but what would you write in UK English? Bob, Quid Pound?)

I wish I had more time for this.
I recognize this type DELCO Starter from experience with MV parts.

DELCO 11108406 (FWD) Starter is a Group 4 Starter
Here are 3 other DELCO Part Numbersnumbers for DELCO Group 4.

11108210 for the M-5H6 IH 6X6
790---------for the IH Half Track

Group 4 are HEAVY-DUTY TYPE /Gear Reduction and share similar physical features and dimensions.

I researched this best I can with what little information I have on my shelf.

TM9-8627 Dated June 1953 Lists the Delco Numbers for Group 4 Starters, and my ORD Interchange list a handful of MV's that I recognize from experience as having this Group 4 Starter used on WWII ARMY vehicles with IH RD and RED 450 Engines.

Perhaps if you can over in the UK find a Starter for the IH Half Track or the M5H6 IH 6X6 you can make your starter work again.

HI Bodger,

According the TM9-1825A https://www.tm9-801.com/tm9-1825a/Tm-9- ... y-1944.pdf, your starter is in group 4. Page 209 lists that starters in that group, and also has a table of fits and tolerances for shaft diameters. The part numbers are 1108209, 1108210, 1108212, 1108404, 1108406, 1108407, |1108408, 1108533, and 1108538.

As Ben mentioned, there may be the opportunity to either replace the whole starter with another from that group, or scavenge one for parts. I have found several available from this group. They range in price from Just over $100 USD to $1500 USD for a "restored" one. I'll send you a PM.

Thanks for your help guys, armed with the cross references I will see what’s available in the uk or Europe. Hopefully I can get the FWD up and running soon one way at another.

Once again many thanks

Hi everybody, once again thanks for the help and suggestions.

In the end we went down the road making a brand new starter motor using a 2kw Denso reduction gear motor with a custom made mount. it arrived today and went straight on with ease (its a lot smaller and lighter than the original!) and works a treat :D hopefully the FWD will be back to life soon :D

we have kept the specs so if anyone happens to be in the same boat another can be made.

sadly i forgot to take a pic before fitting it as i was too excited!
