Approximate weight of G506 Cargo Bed?
I'm looking at getting an A frame gantry and hoist to help around the shop. While I can use it to remove jeep tubs and the car of the G506, the first thing I want touse it for is to remove the cargo bed from it. As the gantry's and the actual hoist themselves are weight rated, I can't find the weight of the empty cargo bed with no seats or bows or dump hardware on it.
Empty weight with tailgate?
Thanks.

Page 4, TM 9-805 Subtracting the weight of a G7103 (chassis with cab) 5,870 from the weight of a G7107 ( cargo less winch) 7,545 the bed weight should be 1,675 lb. the TM does not mention troop racks or tailgate.

I should have stopped on a scale and weighed these during the drive home. Could have subtracted the known weight of my trailer and divided it in half.

Re: Approximate weight of G506 Cargo Bed?
The weight of an all steel cargo bed is around 650 to 700 lbs. When I found the bed for my 1st. Chevy I trailered it to my friends metal shop and we lifted it off the trailer by hand. I am 6' 1" tall and of substantially muscular build, but it was at my limit back in 2002. I would not attempt a lift like today.
When I received the composite bed 4 months ago for Emma, three of us moved it by hand and it was manageable. All the wood had rotted away and I removed the tailgate, making the bed much easier to lift. But I would venture to guess it weighed about 425 lbs.

Re: Approximate weight of G506 Cargo Bed?
This will probably be the heaviest item I will need to lift in my current restoration project schedule. From what I reading, a 1,000 lb capacity gantry and either a chain hoist or en electric hoist should do the job. Lifting the bed and then, either rolling the chassis out from under it or folling the gantry and bed away from the chassis and onto some sort of fabricated rolling work platform at waist level is what I am forecasting.
Not much, if any on the beds in the service manual for the actual truck. Is there another source of written information on the cargo beds themselves?
We don't have the truck here in front of us it is in storage, but my son seems to think that the sides and front panel actuall bolt together and total disassembly of the bed will be possible. It is a composite bed with wooden boards on the underside covered by a think metal skin on the inside of the bed. Usual dings and dents in the side panels and tailgate. No grab andles and footholds on the top of the tailgate, some stake pockets and some hooks will need to be repaired or replaced. And, of course no bows or stakes or troop seats or any of that hardward.
But, that's why I bought it. If it was in perfect shape, it wouldn't need me.

Wow; Those are the Wood beds? Unusual as they usually don't last 8o yrs. Our local fellow in WA, built a wooden gantry that worked fine. Use pole barn 6x6's and bolt it together, when finished take it apart. Newc in Oregon

Signsup, I built a gantry from 4 X 6 joist that a contractor was going to discard. It works really well. And whats more, when I am finished with it I can cut it up to make a nice fire.
Wow Robin, those beds are really nice. What a great find!!!

Re: Approximate weight of G506 Cargo Bed?
Well, OSHA (my wife) wasn't too keen on the wooden barn post hoist idea, so she gladly funded the purchase of this gantry off Craigs List for $200. 3 ton gantry with 2 ton hoist, so I should be able to handle most items I have on my restoration schedule. It does elescope and rolls and comes apart for transport and storage in the shop.
But, now I know it will handle the weight of the bed, which is what I needed to come. Thanks for providing the info.

Re: Approximate weight of G506 Cargo Bed?
Picked it up this weekend. Pull pins out the side and the entire top I beam and position legs comes out and the two support legs become seperate. So, slide the trolley and hoist off, and you have three pieces that can lay up against a wall in the shop of lay on the floor under a workbensh. So, I dn't have to build a wooden Trojan Horse everytime I want to raise or lower a body or bed off a chassis. I'm stoked!
Anytime anyone is in the Atlanta area and wants to borrow it, let me know.
I'll post a photo of us lifting the bed off the G405 when we get it to that point. If I start working on the Chevy before I get the 27 Model T done and sold, my commander in Chief will transfer me to Greenland.
