GTB Build

Post by 1943Willysgpw » Thu Nov 02, 2017 10:45 am

I purchased 2 GTBs and am making one. I would attempt to rebuild both but, one has had a large section of frame removed. I thought I would share what pictures I have of my GTB build. I have been gathering parts and started on the power train/drive train. I do not expect this to be a "quick" build even if I work on it relentlessly. This is due to the cost involved and my project overload. I have my plate full. So, that being said, here is the motor, transmission and transfer case. I wish I would have taken more detailed pictures when I rebuilt the transfer case. Anyway, here is what I got. The first engine pic is from the ebay add in which I purchased it.

The motor is now on a stand and I am putting the pistons in. Edit note. Notice I have installed the correct camshaft from the GTB donor engine.

Transfer case pictures. Of course I had to make my own gaskets and figure out the O.D. and I.D. of all the seals. Finding them took some time.

Having a biznitch of a time with the piston rings. I seated the rings in the cylinders and the gap is to spec. The ring depth in the piston groove is correct. Put the rings on and after placing 3 (magic number) piston in the cylinders the crank will not turn. Figured out the oiler ring set is a tad wide. This is causing pistons to bind. AARRGGHH. Found some 2GTS 6149 rings. Going to try them. The ones from Mac's Auto do not seem to fit (2 sets tried $$)

Would you be so kind to post the numbers for the transfer case seals which you used? Were the part numbers any relation to old part numbers from the parts manual?

I will have to look and see. I think I kept the boxes. I measured the O.D. and The I.D. with dial calipers and looked them up. When I get a chance, I will check it out. The parts manual did not cross to anything. The older part numbers were for leather seals that were a tad wider.

The parts numbers are as follows. 7725 and 7798 according to the manual. You will need three of the 7725s and one 7798. OK. Now the truth of it. I could never find or cross these numbers. So, I measured the inside diameter I.D. and the outside diameter O.D. as well as the thickness. Got close on the thickness (not crucial) and found these two large seals. I cannot remember which is which but, I did write down the measurements of one. This is what you will need to do, measure both of yours and compare it to the measurement I have. Which ever matches, buy the quantity of that one you need and the remaining one will be the other. Here goes. 2.125 X 3.125 X .375= p/n 472016. The other seal is p/n 450301. I will keep looking for the other small seal number. Wish me luck.

Thanks,
I wound up buying seals for a project from Summit Racing. The seals were "descendant" seals from the original ones, with a new number, but were Timken seals like the originals. Do you remember the manufacturer off hand? I save all my boxes nowadays, or at least write down the numbers in the restoration folder of the vehicle. Thanks again!

National Seal. How did you get Summit to send them? Did you measure them or cross reference?

This was for another project, not GTB. I matched them from measurements. I just wanted to mention the business as they showed up after a few day search on the net. GTB content- they were for a USN Mark IV Bomb Cart.
