Where is that old encyclopedia BENDY? . He should know what it is.................. I removed similar assemblies from my Chevy about 5 years back when I was building it for the previous owner.

I have seen that ring on the axle studs before. If you have a hub with wobbled out stud threads or through heavy use and abuse you are breaking axle studs the ring act's like a girdle and ties all of the studs together for strength. At one time there was a mfg. making them for different axles.

I am not sure how utilizing even longer bolts or studs could make the assembly stronger, it looks like it would weaken the stud attachment. Perhaps another mystery, or example of an ill-conceived remedy. If you look closely at the image above, one can see that the inside of this "ring" was cut out with an oxy/acetylene unit as it has jagged lines. Either way, it indicates that this rig most likely has some axle/hub issues.
