Found another Chevy
Hi Guys,
Brought this home from southern Maine last week and thought you might be interested in seeing a few pictures. The gentleman that sold it to me bought it 30 years ago to skid logs and stopped using it 15 years ago. He was very happy to see that it won't go to waste.

Re: Found another Chevy
Jon,
I overlooked the ID plate...that was once a crash truck. Hey, wait a minute, NJ is a cargo without winch, what is the deal? Is that other cool looking plate "General Built" associated with the fire truck body? Did crash trucks ever come with a winch?
Were all of the holes in the door from mirrors being pulled off from trees while working the great Maine woods? They obviously did not have welding resources, or they were trying to reduce weight like drag racers used to do when "Swiss cheesing" frames to gain advantage?
I think your PTO may be an original. Visually it is a dead ringer to the "trucks with winch only" drawing in my 1940 parts manual. The manual calls for a Gar Wood Industries model 79Y9020C REV.
She will yield some good parts.

Re: Found another Chevy
You're right Alan i rarely take the easy route, Good things shouldn't come easy. I only have so much time to De-Bubba-fy worn out old trucks, so this one is most likely going to become an organ donor for my other trucks. It has already reaped a few items that will speed up the current trucks rehab.
I think it's a good practice for Truck Junkies to monitor the local Craigslist for parts/inexpensive/project trucks. It would be a crime to see good parts going to the scrapper, and that's where this one was headed.
I do still want those fenders, but there's no hurry.

Re: Found another Chevy
Funny you should bring that up Paul, I caught the NJ on the data plate prior to my site visit. I mentioned to the owner as we were walking out back that the winch had been added at some point and the truck was assembled in Atlanta, he instantly thought i was some kind of expert or something. Boy was he wrong
I'm wondering if this cab was bolted down to another frame? I'm not sure about the hold down bolt behind the seat. Here is another view of the PTO.

The rear cab bolt with the spring looks just like the civvy cob hold down. On the data plate after the word general Chevrolet what does it say to me I thought it said F-550 but I know it's not that

Thanks for the feed back on the bolt, mine didn't have the plate or the spring. The Data plate reads F-500

Re: Found another Chevy
I pulled the PTO and got it pretty well De greased this afternoon, looks to be in really good shape except for the oil seals. It's going to be a tight fit with the exhaust pipe running by it, i may have to have a new pipe bent up with a couple of offsets or maybe cut and weld a couple in myself.
I also found a couple of tools and a bottle of 'Fly Dope.

Re: Found another Chevy
Jon,
Well your PTO is definitely not a Gar Wood, but looks to have been copied from one.
I can set you up with images/measurements to fabricate winch bumper extensions. Keep in mind that the front spring shackles are different on winch trucks.
The bug dope adds to the Maine woods truck authenticity. I remember summers up in the deep Maine woods...the mosquitos were so thick they looked like a cloud. The company is still in business: http://www.hotdoe.com/ole_time_woodsman.html

Re: Found another Chevy
Gentlemen,
I removed the winch for the truck last night and got the bumper pretty much cleaned up too. They cut the front 8'' or so of frame rail off in order to install ( I use this term loosely) the winch. It won't be too much trouble to repair the bumper and replace the missing frame horns. It will be best accomplished with the nose removed.
I have a few questions for you winch truck owners/experts.....
The winch assembly is held together by 2 heavy angle irons ( L3-1/2x3x1/2'') that run perpendicular to the frame of the truck. The forward most angle attaches to the bottom of the frame extensions ( see attached pic of Paul's Chunk). How does the rear angle attach? Is there an additional cross member on winch trucks?
A picture is worth a thousand words so any photo's you guys could share, particularly of how the winch connects to the truck and what it's supposed to look like would be most helpful.
The frame extensions are a formed C channels. What is the section height, material thickness and flange widths? And the overall length of the frame extensions?
Does anyone have an extra winch brake housing I could Buy/swap or borrow in order to copy? Mine is long gone.
Lastly, Bubba and his cutting torch removed the rear foot or so of frame from my truck, is there an extra rear frame and bumperettes out there some place?
Thanks in advance for the shared information and tech support, it really helps.

Re: Found another Chevy
Jon,
The picture of the winch "Chunk" actually looks relatively unmolested, at least with regards to the winch extensions and the forward spring perches. It looks just like my July '42 winch model. Early trucks had a different front bumper arrangement, so if that is what your truck is, I can't be much help. Your bumper looks a lot like the one shown in the early maintenance manual (lube chart). https://www.dropbox.com/s/xgoxdsva6onob ... Manual.pdf
I am not sure, but it looks like your front spring perches are sitting higher than those on "Chunk".
The winch itself (on my truck and "Chunk") have large cast side members that bolt in the rear to a frame cross-member, and in the front to a large steel angle. The angle is slung under the frame extensions, and bolted through the bottom of the extensions. The front angle is a very heavy angle (5/8 thk if I remember correctly). I think the angle had the legs clipped.
