1945 235 Cu. In. Motor for Sale

Postby Sleeve » Fri Mar 09, 2012 5:46 pm

In the not too distant future I will have the original 235 motor out of my 45 506 for sale. It starts and runs ok but it is in need of a rebuild and there is a rattle to it that may be a rod bearing starting to go. I'd like $100.00 for it and to be able to pass it on to someone who may need it otherwise it will probably go to the scrap yard. If anyone is interested PM and I'll describe what parts go with it and what parts don't.

Rod bearings ( Babbitt ) or mains thrust bearing probably bad too
Check the cylinder bore and taper, check the crank for size at the mains and rods
a STD crank that needs turning is wwaaayyy more valuable than one already turned. 030.
the born on date of the block maybe of some interest to certain colectors

Hop this helps

I'm still driving the truck at this point so if the starter blocks that number we will have to wait until I pull the motor but I will take a look this AM and see what I can. I'll post em' if I can see'um !

Thanks for checking that, Mike. Could you also report what the main casting number between the distributor and the fuel pump is? Depending on the date and casting number, I'd be interested in this engine.

Well here's the casting # by dist.

GM
88970
I9

Sure enough the build date is completely blocked by the starter so unless I get ambitious and pull the starter off to look that # will have to wait till I pull the motor.

I'll post a few pictures too.

Thanks Mike. That's an interesting number. I haven't run across it before. The one that seems to be the most prevalent is GM 839931. Other variants, depending on year, could be GM 839751 or GM 3835335

An original block for wartime production would be stamped at the dist. Boss bv 1001and up
any other letter code would indicate a replacement engine either govt or civi

Hope this helps

CORRECTION ON THE FIRST CASTING NUMBER, AFTER THE FIRST LETTERS GM IT SHOULD HAVE READ: 889770.

It looks like I left a 7 out, sorry.

Any chance that second number is a 3? 839770 is a 216 c.i. from 1942 - 1951.

Gentlemen,

I found a couple of websites that may help with determining engine castings/numbers for early Chevy's.

http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt ... mbers.html

http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/che ... /cast.html
1941 g7106 4X4 (soon!)
1993 F-350 IDI dually 4X4
1975 IHC Scout2 4x4
2003 JD tractor 4X4
1989 Toyota pickup 4x4 (beater firewood truck)
1996 Subaru Legacy AWD (daily driver)
2010 Subaru Forester AWD (wifes car)

Do you see the trend?

Thanks for the links. This one is also useful. It shows images of where the numbers are located on various components.
