No Problem! You can most definitely use that data/ images for your Fonts...that SANS SERIF is a generic term fore sure!

When you start looking at the types of Sans Serif there are 100's of variations, I think the General motors Font looks a lot like the "Arial" font. I made my numbers for my G527 with the font you posted, I used a 4 X power magnifying glass to use the dimensions in the 3 inch characters in the AR 850-05, I couldn't find andy examples in 4 inch format. The reprint I have is fuzzy in detail, but with a vernier caliper and some graph paper I pulled it of decent. The dimensions in the AR 850-05 book are in thousandth of an inch. I then transferred it to come kitchen contact paper and put it onto the side of the tank. It kinda spider-webbed/bleed through some spots, but I touched it up with a little brush. Its hard to pull of the making of stencils, but I was trying to get it just right. I could eventually make out the G7117 passenger side hood, by rubbing my hands across the paint and looking at an angle in the afternoon sun. That slight oil from my hands did just enough to show the difference in paints!

Here are some pictures of the steering box seal change, the black seal is too big but is holding up just fine so far. I smacked the seal in about 1/2 way, but the deeper it is put into the bore the more it wants to roll and deform. I Got about 20-30 miles on it driving around town and no leaks so far. The cork seal retainer is kinda a bugger to get out without destroying it. I had to slightly bent out a spot, work a seal puller under it and pry it out. I tried to pull it with some seal picks and couldn't pull it off. A conventional seal puller it too wide to get between the gap of the shaft and retainer so you have to pry it out some.

Be Advised: The shaft metal is semi-soft, I made a booger mark on it and had to knock the burr down with a small point file, so don't go Neanderthal on the seal extraction and damage the sector shaft!

Got to tinkering with the front bumper, used my good old buddies the 3/4 ton (680 kilos) chain "come-a-longs", the hay barn pilings, some heat with a MAPP fuel torch for light heat and a 20 pound sledge hammer to thump it at the wrinkle areas.

It worked better than I thought, I wasn't sure if the hooks were gonna pop off the bumper and become missile hazards or if they would be too weak to pull the bumper metal...I still have to massage it some more in places to get the front side "Bubble" out of the ends of the frame rails by the hooks, but it looks alot better without the tweaked ends.

It ended up stretching/bending one of the fixed hooks on the top come-a-long making it no longer serviceable. I'll have to get a replacement hook or a whole new chain hoist...I thought it was an acceptable casualty to make the bumper more serviceable

BE ADVISED: If you try this stand away from the chain hooks path, don't stand between the bumper and the chain anchor point in case the hooks pop off the edge of the bumper, it can bite you really bad if something lets go. The chain is grade 80, the chain hoist are grade 80 chain also.

Hey Cody,
You're moving too fast for me, I've been meaning to respond to the steering box oil seal post because I have an M37 oil seal that fit's the Chevy nicely, here's a couple of pics...

Steering sector seal-2.jpg
Steering sector seal-2.jpg (68.12 KiB) Viewed 2989 times
This seal has the correct ID, the (if I remember correctly) is .005-.007 smaller than the recess in the Chevy steering box. I cemented mine in with just a lick of form a gasket and it doesn't leak at all.
Nice moves with the chain come along's,the bumper came out great. Someone must have used you truck to push something really heavy to bend the bumper like that.

Finally got around to uploading photos of the Troop Seats wood installation. I Haven't found a whole set of WWII hardware yet so I scrounged up a M35 set in the Arizona territory at a place called "Jacks Government Surplus Trucks" in Tucson, AZ. I got them for $200 USD (171.51 Euro).

I selected Red oak because it was on the wood species list, also it was a bit cheaper than white oak. The other wood types were more and more expensive. After mocking up the wood and climbing up and down 500 times the length was 106 inches (2.692 meters) for the backs and butt slats. The headache rack ended up being 70 1/2 inches (1.790 meters). I was not aware that on M35 series headache racks the wood is thinner, WWII headache racks being 1 inch (25.4 mm) thick, M35 hardware is 3/4 (19 mm) inch thick. The difference is the "C" channel on the Port/Starboard ends.

So be advised, dimensions vary from what troop seat hardware you employ.

The next thing I was tinkering with is the Canvas bows. I was aspiring to have a Field Kitchen truck to make chow in the boonies or where ever I have a hankering to travel. So I again used some M35 vertical wood/bows/corners that D.R.H. scrounged up near the Barstow, Ca area, but I had to shorten the top horizontal wood by 18 inches (.475 m), I cut 9 inches (.228 m) off each side to removed the over sized bow retainer rivets.

The "Mess Configuration" vertical dimension I went after was 20 inches (.508 m) above "Troop Transport Configuration". This allows standing in the rear of the cargo area to use it as workable space. I raised the vertical wood the selected height, drilled 2 holes, one for the raised position and the other for pin storage when the bows are in the lower standard position. The Tarp I used is a 10 foot (3.048 m) x 16 foot size (4.876 m). I had to add more grommets to the edge of the tarp to allow lashing of the edges onto the bows and prevent the wind blowing the tarp around during driving.

Now I have to load up my messing equipment and my G527 Water trailer and go on an Adventure! (Walkabout!)

I just gotta find the time...

The other item I got to tinker with recently is my spare tire carrier!!! ( Thanks 8th I.D. Ernie!)

Here are the photos of the D/A of the carrier. The rivets were drilled out in stages, I ground off the heads, drilled the rivets in multiple diameters to relieve pressure. I didn't drill them all the way through, but just below the frame rail depth so that they could be driven out with a drift and the other side of the rivet acted like a "puller" smacking it with a hammer.

The air hammer didn't pop out the rivet easy like I hoped, the air hammer just bounced and mushroomed the ground off rivets, the drilling and drift hits is what popped out the rivets.

One thing I noticed on my G506 is the presence of "N's" on alot of the items like levers, brackets and spacers. Since my truck was made in Norwood, Ohio my guess is that this is assembly plant specific. If you look at the spacer/ T-shim under the old carrier you'll notice it too has a "N" stamped on it. After sand blasting the spare tire carrier from Ernie I noticed it had a "MA" symbol on the shaft support so my guess is that that particular spare tire carrier had come from the Baltimore, Maryland plant...any body seen other stampings like that?

For those who were looking close, there was remnants of black paint under the hot riveted components, more evidence that the chassis items were black before they were Olive Drab.

It appears that you have indeed been busy Jonesy!! The high canopy looks great.........and your spare tire carrier too!!! Man, how often do those things come up for sale!! The carrier I recued from Navy City Metals in Bremerton had the very same markings on the very same pieces. I am happy to see your truck out on the road :) .

Saw your post about the cargo truck with high bows. Mine is set up like that for convoys. My question is where did you get the canvas tarp you show on your truck. I need to replace mine but do not want to spend the big dollars. Please post the source of the tarp that you show. Thanks

Any mil-spec 10' x 16' (nominal size) tarp should work. Here is a link to the supplier shown in his picture, look on page 32.

Thanks for the steering box seal info, that will come in handy, and thanks for the responses. I was feeling guilty of not chiming in after you guys comment. I just get bogged down and never reply in a timely manor...

Where I got mine in Southern California is: Major Surplus located in Gardena, CA

https://www.majorsurplus.com/

Be advised:
The grommet holes were not evenly spaced out, they ranged from 20 to 40 inches, they were semi parallel in regards to left and right, nut I had to add 20-ish brass grommets between the existing grommets to have enough rope retention onto the bows. it was made decent, just not super accurate in regards to grommet spacing. It probaby came in from an over seas vendor that re-distributes here in the states. I could have swore it said made in India on a tag somewhere in a stitch. it was about $150.00 (127.75 euros)

Another option you might consider is www.chicagocanvas.com They made a custom "tarp" for me out of milspec canvas (14'-5" finished x 21'-6" finished, 16 oz.OD Canvas) The grommets were installed as per my sketch, which resulted in a "Rain Fly, Large wall tent" that we use for our events. Image

The total cost was $187.80, picked up. Shipping would be extra. I dealt with Brad Mangurten at Chicago Canvas & Supply, 3719 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, Phone: (773) 478-5700, Fax: (773) 588-3123

There are lots of options for the canvas, it is more expensive the thicker you go. The thicker material goes into number duck, instead of ounce duck material.

Here are some shots of a hand crank I made of 3/4 (19 mm) round stock. I got a 6 (1.82 M) foot piece for $10 bucks and bent it up wit a torch to bend the 90 degree turns. The dowel I used in the end is a 5/16 (7.9 mm) hardened one. I got a drill bit that was .010 inch (.254 mm) smaller to make it a "press fit" into the shaft. The dowel was a bit too large for that size hole, it would have been better to have about a .006 inch (.152 mm) press to have less deforming during the initial smacking into the hole. The white line on the round bar is where the dampener Helix is at its highest on the 2 lugs.

I had to grind a little bit off the ends of the dowel to get it into the front "bowtie" bumper support. The depth of the dowel was just until the end of the shaft was touching the crank shaft through the harmonic balancer.

I haven't tried to start the old War Horse that way yet, but with the Helix shape on the harmonic balancer I'm sure it will operate normally and push away the crank after the engine fires up and spins faster.

The total length was: 50 inches (1.27 m)
first bend @ 90 degrees: 31 inches (.78 m)
second straight length to handle: 11 inches (.27 m)
handle length: 8 inches (.20 m), enough to put both hands onto crank

There are reproduction hand cranks for civilian trucks, but I haven't seen any with specifications/dimensions or ones labeled for G506 series trucks with winches...
