More test driving, got about 7 miles on it now... (11.2 Kilometers)

Getting a little better with the double clutchin'. I was kinda lugging the engine from 3rd to 4th, I got it up to 30 Mph (48 Kph). The camera doesn't seem to auto focus well with all the bouncing around on the bumpy service road. It takes my brain a bit to re-calibrate and pull it out of gear, rev it up, THEN downshift.

Next I'll have to sandblast/primer/paint the front end sheet metal. Now that she is running pretty consistant, I am glad there isn't a trail of parts falling off as I drive.

Got to tinker a bit today and do some base coat cleaning/primer/painting...there are the 2 spots that have "Air 55" pressure stenciling too.

When I get a chance I'll flip it and do the same and to the top side, then the O.D. paint.

Thanks, It is nice to drive the old Iron Horse and hear that nice "Gear Whine".

It a good feeling to hang big trophy's on her like the front sheet metal, all that little unseen tasks isn't usually very visually impacting. :D

One thing I found out the other weekend was differences in civilian and military distributors. I got a rebuilt distributor from chev's of the fourties, pulled the one out of the engine and noticed that the upper half of the distributor was about 1/2 inch shorter and did not have a way to use the point/ condenser cover under the cap/rotor.

So, be advised that the "Rebuilt" distributors for the 1942 235 aren't all the same. The replacement did not have any holes on the side for the radio filterette or the same hold down clips that work with the point/condenser separator plate cover under the cap. The grease cup port was also rotated about 90 degrees to the left too, AND it didn't have a AC Delco I.D. tag. So, who knows what year engine it came off of.

Here are some pics of the front end sheet metal:

Buffed off with wire wheel, light spot sand blasting, etching primer, medium gloss black, 33070 O.D., now the whole truck needs to be painted to match and get decent over spray onto the chassis.

Looky-Looky! I got these Monday!!!

I had called an old timer that is a licenced VIN verifier by the name of Ray Del Pino after having his business card for over 5 years...

He picked up the line and answered to my surprise. I asked if he still did that type of service and his reply was "yes". I ask how much his services cost and he said $50.00, he was already in the area too, I figured that was a decent price to have some body come by the house, bring DMV paperwork and be able to pick his brain about stuff.

He came by the shop and checked out the truck, He had me fill out 5 items for California registration:

1- Application for registration (buyer/seller info)
2- Statement for fact (instead of bill of sale)
3- His VIN verifing document (otherwise you have to take it to the DMV)
4- Commercial declaration of weight (pounds of truck weight)
5- My CRS kicked in...forgot what the other one is. (More legal Jargon about how the truck is going to be used)

Brought the stuff Ray gave me to a local DMV, waited in line, went to the window, the lady plugged in the info, told me the fee was $485.00, about fell backwards and asked if it was going to be that much every time and her response was, "No, just that first time. After that it should be cheaper." I then walked over to another window and they handed me the plates!

Who-Hoo!!! :D

One thing he asked me after commenting on how it was running good was the valve lash, He asked, "What did you set them at?" My reply was .010 and .020, he said,"Good, I had a fleet of those years ago doing fencing work and that will run good." The other thing he said that made me laugh in regards to 235 engines was, "It is better to hear them valves, than smell them burn." Ray is a cool old guy. Now I have to get insurance that will cover the old girl decent. I heard Hagarty has insurance for these old trucks.

Great news! I might add you got a good deal with Del Pino, I paid about the same amount, but mine is non-opt'd, so I will have to pay more for the the tags! Did you spray the black on bare metal or did you use primer first?
Thanks

Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays everybody!!! Thanks for the Encouraging words, I'm getting close to Mobile Operations for sure!

Gentry, I didn't have a California DMV title, so I think that was a big chunk of the cost, the new activation of a title. I just had a bill of sale that got lost a long time ago...

As for the paint, I buffed the old paint, put the etching primer on paint that didn't come off (80% paint/ 20% metal), black paint, then the O.D.

I got to tinker today, I noticed something on the rear of the generator and didn't know which was correct. The mounted generator did not have a provision for an oiler cup, but my spare did. I thought that was odd...

I was gonna get the brake light switch into the master cylinder but I got the wrong one it has 2 "bullet" connector pins on the switch, I had a single blade type. But in my searching for the wiring connectors on the chassis harness I found my black out light bracket I bought a long time ago, So I bolted that on. It already had the holes for it on the upper left of the grill. I'm not sure when the change over to the fender black out light occurred, maybe 1943?

I got a fuel sender for Christmas and had to put it into the tank. It was a 0-30 Ohm unit and full tank is at aprox. 0-2 Ohms for reference. I copied the length of the old float arm and removed the center sliding sender mount and just used the top 5 hole mounting part. It was a universal unit from Brothers truck parts in Corona, Ca for about $40.00 USD.

The other thing I did was mount some welting onto the inner fenders. I looked all over for the correct fender staples, that were 1/2 wide x 1/2 long (12.7mm x 12.7mm) and could not find them. I ended up getting .041 (1.04mm) guage safety wire and making them. I pulled out the old original staples and used the same staple holes in the metal. I used a pair of slip joint pliars that were 1/2 inch wide, bent down one side, grabbed it again, bent the top and grabbed the wire again to make a ""U" staple. I then poked them from the inside out with the tips facing outboard, poked the welting with the tips of the new staples, pulled the staples and inserted them into the 2 new welting holes and inserted them into the 2 fender holes and bent them over to retain the welting. It was brown, but after more O.D. paint it will be o.k.

I had the front sheet metal supported with 2 500 pound "come-a-longs" while doing the staples, so if you try to pull the front sheet metal up support it with something so you don't get bonked if it falls down.

Should have bought a NOS Surplus G-508 Dustproof Distributor for your Chevy, they go right in, have the inner dust cover and work the same as Chevy. The NOS G-508 Distributors are out there. I may even have a clean used one with no wear.

I suspect that the main difference between the generator end plates is that one will have a bronze bush (the one with the oil hole) and the other will have a shielded and pre-packed ball race. Probably a 6203.

Cody. Wanted to comment on you getting your rig registered. That's terrific man ! I live in CA and just got my reg. up to date a couple of years back. Had to jump through a couple of hoops but it wasn't too difficult. The CHP offered to send an officer to my house to verify and they followed up. Tried my best to get the officer to call it a Suburban instead of a Panel but he wouldn't do it. That costs me plenty now because the Panel automatically has to register as commercial.
Dang ! Not that I expect any sympathy from you guys, as obviously only the Panel in the G506 lineup could conceivably be considered a passenger vehicle (of sorts). The biggest expense of the reg. process was me having the rig towed to a certified weigh station, which thankfully wasn't too far away. Fortunately the weight (approx 6500 lbs.) is on the lower side of these trucks which kept me in a lower price range. (as an aside, the data plate on this truck shows a GVW of 9975 lbs.).

Saw you were maybe going with Hagerty. Have you procured insurance from them ? I tried, in fact I thought I was all set up. My Allstate agent did all the application stuff for me, took my credit card info, and had it all set up. Good price too ! Then, I get two more requests. One, a form where I reject the earthquake insurance. No problem. Then, number two, a photo of the truck in the garage. Only problem, no garage. No garage, no insurance from Hagerty (in this case anyway). Darn ! Had a nice agreed upon value and everything.

Anyway, ended up insuring it with the rest of our rolling stock through Allstate. Costs more. Don't have the agreed upon value. But it will be ok for now.
Hope you get yours worked out. Looks like you have a good spot for your truck. Should all go well for you.

Ben, Thank you for the info, I was wondering what type of distributor that was, I don't ever recall seeing a inner cover like that before, and the lock clips don't allow for a direct clip on of the distributor cap without the other lower piece. I'll look around for the G508 Dustless unit.

Motto, Rodger on the end covers, the unit that is bolted on the engine has a sealed ball bearing in the rear housing under the 3 screw access cover.

Kanobby, I sent an email to Hagarty for an estimate and have yet to receive an email from them, and that was like 3 weeks ago. Slackers. I'll have to call them. AAA club quoted me an extra $94 a year for liability on our current policy and $204 for full coverage. He didn't even ask what type of 42 chevy I had, he just kept me on hold for 10-ish minutes. I don't recall the exact coverage of our 2 car policy, so I'll have to see If it will be good enough for the old girl. I still need to lay in the harnesses, so I'm not quite ready for the road with out lights
