Ryck: Great job on your K-51. Im restoring one as well. SCR-299 is 85% complete and haven't started one the Truck yet. I need help on the side box measurements. Can you help? Im also looking for 6 of the big Appleton plugs. I am having 1000' of the Gen to Truck cable made. Plenty extra if you need any or someone else. I'll be at the MVPA convention in Louisville, KY in June if you make it over here. Seeing what you've done, you give all the K-51 guys motivation over here Im sure. There's not that many of us though. Take care and thanks for sharing. Bill Miller bill@millerpower.com

Ryck
Just came across your this post and what a great job you did on your K-51/SCR 299!!!
Do you have the typewriter(mill) for your truck. They are not easy to come by , as you know
they are upper case only and the zero has the slash through it.

I have a Navy grey mill and it looks exactly the same as a Remington #5 portable typewriter.
The standard #5 is a commonly found typewriter and if a typewriter was needed for display
it would look the part.
The only photo I've ever seen of a typewriter in the 299 was a pic in a advertisement in a wartime
issue of Radio News and it looks like the Remington #5

I read in some publication (can't remember where ) that they used every typewriter on hand and did not care of model or maker. The shifting of all civilian production to military production resulted in a shortage of typewriters.

You're probably right about the shortages on typewriters especially early on in the War. Though I think a priority would have been for the 'mills' used in radio work as letter/number code groups were sent and it was important to distinguish between a zero and the letter O.

The table on your 299 where the typewriter would go, it looks like a portion of the table top can be removed and I'm guessing flipped over so the typewriter can be secured to the table by some 'catches' that secure the typewriter to it.

I have the SCR 399/499 and on the large chest on the lid that folds down there are two of the 'catches ' that secure the Remington #5 mill.

I have a 42 Chevrolet K51 that is coming along slowly. We have been paint stripping. There is a lot of metal!!!

I would suggest that the original poster get a set of door stops. Someone removed them from my truck and sprung both rear doors. That is well beyond me and so it will have to go to the body shop to fix it. CCKW shop van stops appear to work.

I have the BC610 and 2 each of the 2 receiver types along with all the antennas and bases. I also have a 1 ton trailer with PE95 genset. It is coming slowly...

Since I took the picture I installed stoppers from a Dodge WC54 ambulance, these fit perfectly.
