FYI
The last issue of Vietnam magazine, I just received, June 2017, has a spec page on the M-113a1 Armored Personnel Carrier.
Called one of those " Home " for a while.

Re: M113a1
I spent several nights propping up the trim vane with camo system poles to sleep on but mostly slept on top the engine radiator grill with my head on the closed driver hatch

Re: M113a1
I was in the 2/8th ( mech) Inf. most of my tour.
Started out as the squad machine gunner. Carried an M-60.
Mid summer, the track (APC) was taking out a night ambush squad. Hit a land mine. Totaled the track and sent everyone on board to Japan. Fortunately, I was not on that one.
I requested the drivers position for the replacement track and got it.
Spent my nights on the drivers side fold down seat. Had a pet monkey that curled up and slept on my chest. Best warning alarm I ever saw. If he heard anything he did not like, he sat straight up, and so did I !
Good thing. I stayed with the track. Bad thing, when we were stopped and made contact, I was the ammo barer for the 50 Cal. at the TC position.
Spent the rest of my time with the 2/8th driving. Spent a short time ground pounding along the DMZ with the 1/5th Inf. before coming home.
When I got back, I was assigned to the 2nd Armor Div. at Ft. Hood. You guessed it. As an M-113a1 driver.
I double checked. The M113a1 article in Vietnam magazine was in the August 2017 issue.
