Does anyone know what this latch is for? It's on the passenger-side floor of my M2A1 half track, just ahead of the door. I thought it was a field modification of some sort but I saw one exactly like it in the same location on an M3A2 in Volume 1 of Doyle's half track book. A couple of other people said their half tracks had one as well, but so far no one knows what it's for. Thanks for any information.

Sorry for the crappy picture. When I tried to upload it the message kept coming up that the file was too large so I kept cropping the photo. When it finally fit, I posted it and this is what came out. I'm sure it's nuthin' I'm doing wrong!

Your friend has his work cut out for him! Thanks for posting it. That's two references made to a binocular case - WayOffTrack also mentioned a binocular case holder of some sort on the halftrackinfo site. Makes sense that something would set into the bracket and the latch would secure it. I'd love to see a picture of it in use. I still think the theory that the designers included a "BRS", or Beer Restraint System, is worth considering. Anyhow, until I get a binocular case that fits it, that's what mine will be used for. Not for road use, of course – just to keep the cargo safe for the trip home.
