42WLA wiring

Post by fordm8 » Sat Feb 03, 2018 12:07 pm

Hello,

can someone confirm, that a 42 WLA series 1 only have one horn cable clamp 4703-38A vs later models had 2?

Thanks,

Ryck

My 1943 WLA parts manual calls out (2) for the 40WLA, 41WLA and 42WLA

One for the wiring loom from the handle bars on left side to the head light, horn and terminal plate and one for the right side loom, the dash wiring harness to the horn, blackout fender light and to the terminal plate.

Hope this helps.

Hi Craig,

what you describe is correcte for the 1942 and up build WLA's. For the November/December 1941 build WLA's I cant find an evidence of the clip on the right side from the dash to the horn and terminal plate in Bruce Palmers book.
Does some one have the correct parts-list to check?

Have a good Sunday,

Ryck

As Craig said already, later partslists like mine (oct 30 1943) say 2 clamps for all types..
Bit dark picture, and for some reason UPSD..?

Here is the picture of an November 1941 dated parts list. It shows horn wire clamp 1 on the 40WLA, 41WLA and 42WLA models. That seems to confirm my guess.

Thanks for the effort resolving this.

"can someone confirm, that a 42 WLA series 1 only have one horn cable clamp 4703-38A vs later models had 2?"

The 42 WLA Type 1, like all 1938-1957 spring fork models, uses two 4703-38A clips. Parts books are not without errors. The parts book you show also states that the 40WLA and 41WLA also used "1". The 41WLA model factory photos (P112-113 2nd Edition) in Palmer's book do show the clip on both sides.

The factory photos of the 42WLA Type I-B do not show any clips but not because they should not have them. None of the wires are attached on the front end. The horn's terminals are bare, the handlebar switch harness is shoved up into the fork from behind the rear leg on the left, and same for the dash to fork harness. The reason being that the bike was assembled only enough to test basic functions and then "knocked-down" to fit in the crate on the subsequent pages.

You will find that Palmer's book does state that the 42WLA Type I uses two clips. Page 130 (2nd Edition), left column, bottom line reads "and front fork wire clip #4703-38A (2)" where (2) means "two used". Also, while barely noticeable (just a flash of silver) the lead bike on the left in the photo on P130 has a clip on the left and the bike on P131 has the clip on the right.

wow, you have eagle eyes. I spend so many time with Palmer's book and didn't see it. Focused to much on the type 1B pictures, not realising that factory pictures can also mislead you.

Respect to the Harley Davidson company who made the effort to rectify the error in the parts manual.

Thanks for this great information.
