An old friend comes out for restoration- Indian 841

Post by johnseidts » Thu Dec 21, 2017 2:40 pm

Our 1942 Indian 841. We bought this bike 20 years ago and haven't had the time to work on it. The co-owner and I both just turned 50 and it's time to make this one run. This is pretty much how we found it, but I removed the old seat leather, the skid plate, and battery hold down. We are looking for the following items for this restoration:

1. 2 each front head light stays.
2. Rear crash bars
3. Center stand latch
4. Bolt-on rear fender section
5. Saddle bag pans (same as 741)- we already have the rack and want originals.
6. Front fender stays
7. Rear fender stay/bumper

That looks like a nice project. I look forward to seeing it done. Good luck John.

Chip,
We have started and found what we found wrong back in the day. Looks like a cylinder and both carbs need done. We are very excited to put this one back on the road! We still need all the parts listed.

I'll send you a PM, John.

I have a couple of the reproduction centerstand latch knobs left if you're interested in one.
May also have a couple of extra headlight stays.

The 841 saddle bag pans are different than the 741 pans, by the way.

Update

We got to working on it, and we could not get it to shift using the shift linkage. We opened up the shift cam cover, and could manually shift it. We think that the timing is off between the segment and pawl gear. This means we have to take off the drive shaft, kicker housing, primary, and transmission/clutch housing, because these two gears mate together between the rear crankcase and the transmission/clutch housing and one is mounted on each, so you have to pull that stuff all apart to properly time them. If you like working on stuff, news that you have to rip more stuff apart should make you happy, right?

The HAPPIER good news- everything inside looks beautiful, very little used. The shifter cam, which moves the two shifter forks, shows little to no wear. And after soaking the one cylinder, I have compression which I didn't have before.

Lots of fun working on it, but it is drastically different from a 741.
