Another Project Perhaps WELBIKE

Post by 17thAirborne » Tue Feb 07, 2017 12:35 pm

I'm looking at this bike. I have crappy pics for now, but it will be a few weeks before I decide on it or not. First i have to go to the Show of Shows in Louisville KY.

It is a British Welbike WW2. Contract 294/23/S.1946 dated 27 December 1942 for 1,341 (reduced to 1,241) Welbikes Frame number 2614 to 3954 War Department number C5153414 to C5154654. mark 3.

The Engine No. is XXE3708. I am unsure of the frame number as it is heavily painted. It has everything except the canvas seat, clutch handle, carb, fuel tanks and cables. All of those items are available as nice repros with some original items obtainable.

I pulled the trigger, here it is for now. Will have to set this aside to finish at least one of the 5 things I'm working on.

What is the model of Carburetor that does with this bike. I see a good bit of info, but cannot find the exact model type.

It's a Villiers carb, there are no model numbers on them though, just a bronze bodied, r/h fuel feed type, let me know if you need the needle adjustment, and float measurements, nothing else can be adjusted, well the idle, but you do that with the bowden cable.

Cheers,

Alex,

Thanks for the input. I have seen many different types of the Villiers Carbs. Is this what they should look like? Bronze with silvered coating?

Can you post an image when you get a chance if this is not the correct model.

Thanks much

I also found this image. Is the 90 angle in the fuel feed pipe at the red arrow a fitting or is that 90 degree bend part of the carburetor?

Top picture is an alloy one, not bronze, and 75% chance that the bore is too small, but will fit and work, will get some pictures hosted, if I have any in the PC here.

Here the only picture I have right now:

Image

The bronze carbs and airfilters are impossible to find nowadays, and getting real expensive!

Can take more pictures when home again.

The fuel inlet is a banjo, with the special banjo bolt, it screws into the carb, same as in both tanks, there are little fuel strainers in them originally.

Alex,
Thanks much. I am sensing that there is no associated model number with the bronze carb. I will have to do comparison measurements and check my carb to engine elbow. Here is a pic of it and the OD of the elbow is 19mm or exactly 3/4". It is made of bronze.

Oz, yes that is the right one! but all the carbs will fit the manifold, that size is the same, I meant the internal diameter of the carb, not the spigot one, sorry.

Will measure when home in a couple days, am in Normandy right now. The carb will have a part number, but have to look it up in the parts list, don't have that here.
