Hey Oz,

That generator needs to some more bling- bling done to it! as of a gloss black paint job from how it was done from the factory.

I used gloss black appliance enamel paint from the hardware store it stays wet looking even after it's dry.

The project looks great!!! going have to dig that cosmoline out and have a wipe it on party?
I have a gallon pail of cosmoline waiting for a project like yours.
Let me know if your wanting some?

I do need to look at the finish on the genny again.

A bit of cosmolene will do me good on the exposed steel parts when I am ready to close it up. I had a piece of that waxed wrapping somewhere that i can use to cover the drive shaft. That gets tied on the end with string and covered in cosmo.

Oz
Worked most of today and went off of your dimensions. Here it what I have so far. Right behind you crate wise, wayyy behind you engine wise. Cedar looked awesome but it was 5/8 thick and was was off on all the measurements so I settled on pine also.

That is looking awesome. When you get the total height figured out let me know. It should be no problem to make minor adjustments with the upper mounting block using a table saw to cut to the right thickness. The dimensions I posted were from the actual crate in the museum, so they should be workable.

I like what I see.

Thanks Òz
I ran the sides up to 20.75 per your list. Lined the inside with paper per original crated motor and will mock up my motoŕ to check on the mount to head bracket size. May make the sides just to have for moving or ....? Any ideas on crate stenciles?

Oz,
been doing some comparisons of my finished crate and pictures of NOS crates and it seems after mocking up my cylinders and heads that we may be 2 inches or so on both sides to long. Did a half bit comparison of the length of a valve cover compared to the side supports and what really does not look right is the distance of the cylinders to the crates sides. I will send pics if you like but I do not want to over do it and highjack this thread. What makes me second guess this is my repo carb box fits both sides perfect. matt

we measured a valve cover on a original picture and came up with 7/8 inch the wood measured out at 1.25. brought to 1-1 scale that makes 4.5 inches off the we seem to be 1.5 inches to long on both sides and when mocked up, the gaps look perfect. The carb box in the original crate looks to be narrower than the ones we have. I hope this is helping in the crate build. matt

Here is a comparison of an original crated engine and what I have built. You can see the side "pouches" are smaller on the original than in my construction. I can only attribute that to perhaps a smaller size cardboard box for the carburetor was used.

comparison.jpg
Matt, That is what I was referring to in this post here. If I don't build it this wide, the original carb box does not fit at all. I suspect there is another skinny carb box, but I am just not sure.

I wish the guy at the bunker would have given me measurements, but so be it. Were sort of in unknown territory here.

My apologies that things are not working out so great on the dimensions. I wish my data was better.

:D Oh by all means your measurements are a HUGE base to build from and I went into this knowing we are working on estimates. I will adjust and cut my crate down and send pics see what you think tomorrow. We then can figure a size for the carb box.

I found a used genny. It is at my rebuilder's for inspection. Everything inside looks relatively new. He will put it on his test bench and let me know, then I can refinish it for the Type V motor.

How will it be a Type V engine with a H2 date code on it?

Please read this thread (last post) I was trying to nail down that very question, but with no input or definitive data on the matter, I elected to go with the Type IV. I probably posted a type V somewhere in this thread, nut meant Type IV. If you can help with nailing down blank boss case number production dates, I might finish it as a type III instead, but for now I'm just going with the Type IV. I think that is where the cylinders changed to black,

I also think the Type IV and V are finished the same anyway, but i really meant Type IV.
