These should clean up nicely and allow for the new races to be installed when next I go visit Bill. We will probably hone the rods to a bit under the OD of the races, press them in and then hone to correct ID for new bearings.
One thing to be careful of is pressing the bearing races out of the split rod (fork) with no support on the split. Too may rods get ruined by crushing the split. Best to fit a pushing plug into the split and push the lower side out with full support under the rod.

for the pressing in we built a shim to fit between the two race recesses. It was turned on a lathe and worked great. You do make a great point

Masked the cases for painting. I checked a few period images before deciding what to mask and not. It looks like they painted with the two oil pumps on, but mine are still in need of cleaning, so I used an old gasket.

Painted. Color looks a bit more of the early variety. :shock:
It will be just fine for the crate though.

Here are a few self-critiques:

1. The boss where the engine No. goes should be masked off prior to painting.
2. It looks like some crated engines were painted with all engine case screws, rods and nuts installed leaving them OD
3. Should be painted with the oil pump, scavenger pump and the valve guides in place

I started on the crate today. I am unable to work off of exact original dimensions as the two examples are not accessible to me. One museum curator gave me some very rough dimensions. The exact measurement was the depth of the crate at 14". The height and width were not exact and the distances between the components which hold the engine were estimates through Plexiglas.

Given these limitations i decided to work from scratch...sort of.

1. The depth of the crate is 14" and each crate seems a bit different with regards to the number and width of the individual boards used to make the panels. I used the following combination of four boards to arrive at 14"

one 1 x 6 (actual dimensions 0.75" x 5.50")
one 1 x 4 (actual dimensions 0.75" x 3.50)
two 1 x 3 (actual dimensions 0/75 x 2.50)

total actual board width = 14.00"

The width is about 26" so I cut my boards to 28" length and glued them together and clamped them. When I am done with the mock up, and know where everything should go I will cut the two ends to the proper length and get them nice and square.

The two motor mounting flats on the engine are at different heigths from the bottom of the motor. They are at 1.75" from one another on the horizontal plane. I gave about 0.50" clearance for the bottom of the engine.

I cut one 2 x 6 (actual dimension 1.50" x 5.50") to 4.50" in height and 14" long to match the crate depth.

The other I cut to 6.25" from a 2 x 8 (actual dimension 1.50" x 7.50")

The generator pad near the lower motor mount juts out farther from the case than the lower motor mounting pad than the two bolt holes, so it is necessary to cut a notch in the mounting block to allow the generator pad to slide over the mounting block. I will post my dimensions after I make this cut. Upon examining o very small resolution image I can see where the original crate mounting block was cut in this fashion also. A straight notch.

Once I am done with this I can obtain the exact dimention between the two mounting blocks, and given the size of the NOS carburetor box that fits in the slot to the side of the engine mounting block, I can determine the remaining dimensions. I'll post progress later.

Here is the notch cut out of the short motor mount block. It is 5.00" wide and 0.625" from the top.

I set my carburetor box next to the tall motor mounting block to measure the panel side cut. The box is 5.75" wide, so i added just 1/8" to account for fit and making it 5.875". The side panel and its box frame (see images of the crate rendering) are each 0.75" thick, so I need to add 1.50" to the end for one cut. These both sit on TOP of the bottom panel

The space on the other side of the crate opposite the carburetor space is slightly smaller than the carb space, but I have no known dimension. I am using 4.625" My total panel width will be a round 26.00"

LS panels 1.50 + LS panel gap 4.625" + short mount block 1.50" + space between both mounting blocks 9.50" + tall motor mount block 1.50" + carb box space 5.875" + RS panels 1.50" = 26.00"

Got the crate dimensions and such thanks. I had them before but I run a MAC computor so it would not show until I downloaded it on a PC. Looking totally awesome! Learning alot. I should be cutting wood following right behind you next week. Going shooting for the Army this weekend so that puts me behind.
I have two rebuilt M88s but I do not thinkt I will find a nos box one. I have had tons of luck restoring other parts boxes. Could you measure out your carb box for me, thinking maybe I can find one here at work and making one to put the carb in? I have the tape and glue. Just need label and presto, I hope.😉

You bet! Here ya go.

The box is wrapped in that typical heavy waxed type paper that has the green color and looks almost like duct tape. It is then taped with a manila color paper tape like is found at the post office.

Each of the end flaps are 5.25" x 2.625"
The inner dimension of the box is 6.375" x 5.25"

I did not account for the minor difference i dimensions where the corners of the box are folded and where the flaps fold over to seal as mine is slightly compressed from age.

Overall dimension with box, wax wrapping and tape is 5.75" x 5.75" x 6.75"

The orange HD label looks just like the box labels for the bearings but it is a paper label not cardboard. It has been taped over with clear packing tape that has yellowed with age. In the image on the far right side you can see where the tape gun serrated cutter has sliced off the tape.

I am not going to finalize the dimensions for the height of the side panels until I can install the cylinders with heads and the upper mounting bracket. There is a wooden block screwed to the top panel that attaches to the center hole of the mounting bracket.
