42swing wrote:WWII Weekend at Reading very carefully controls who gets on the field with a vehicle (it is an active airfield), so it definitely wouldn't work for an HQ or even a ride through. Could be cool as a day destination if based somewhere else, there is motorcycle parking. Expensive though. Haven't been to Olney, but have heard its a fabulous show for vintage bikes
Oley is worth a look around. I have ridden there on my 741, and my wife has ridden her G3L. The weather in South Central PA at the end of April can be "Changeable" however...........

Good point on Reading, and for that matter Ike's Farm, anybody who wants to USE their Motorcycles on Convoy duty would have to "Cross over" and don a uniform... No big deal really!
For Reading, you need to get your info submitted by mid April to be vetted. We are on the wrong side of the fence at an airport and some of the living historians have weapons, so the FAA and TSA like to know who is coming to the party!!
Again, if any of you are interested, contact me!!! Convoy escort on a Motorcycle is a lot of fun!!!!! More fun than just looking at a restored vehicle if you ask me!

Those are some great comments. Although I have never participated in a convoy with a WLA. I'll bet it would be fun to do escort duty on one.

Now for a good discussion:

1. Location. There are several suggestions. Let's kick around the locations and evaluate them for access to all in the US, ease of facilitating a fun ride, things to do, safety to riders on old bikes (traffic etc) help from an AMCA or MVPA group (people who know the area and can recommend location and services etc)

2. Time frame: 2018. early summer, mid summer or late summer (tourists, kids in/out of school, weather, cost to travel/stay in hotel etc

3. Schedule of events (What do you want to do) Display (indoor/out), swap meet, ride (or rides), dinner/banquet, ride to local attractions, beer drinking BS session, mixer etc

Please evaluate the following locations using the thoughts above and I'll consolidate 3 locations after a while for us to make a decision.

Abeline, KS
New Century, KS
Kansas City, KS
Louisville, KY (MVPA Convention, probably Jun)
Davenport, IA (AMCA Swap Meet late Aug, early Sep)
Oley, PA AMCA Event usually late Apr)
Reading, PA (WW2 weekend in Jun I think)
Milwaukee, WI (HD Museum)

Please address the positives and negatives of one or more locations in your words. Recommend one or two locations to eliminate so we have two or three to hash around after the discussion is near an end.

I only can comment on the following. Milwaukee would be great for the museum but not very central for the Southern crew. Davenport would be good due to the show and is central but tough as it is always around Labor day weekend I think. Even though I live near Milwaukee I am surprised and delighted to see Louisville as a choice. The MVPA show would be a bonus.and as a side note Ft Knox would be a great ride to and stop as tons of the pictures out there were taken at Knox as it was one of the major places for the motorcycle training plus I know where a few of the pictures were taken as I was stationed there and visit every year so I know the area well. July is nice and hot plus dusty so great for pictures. Also central to alot of the people on the G. So my vote would be Louisville! Just my 5$ worth.

Matt,
Those are some great comments. A planned ride to the General George Patton Museum would be a super bonus. Here is a link to the museum

Yes the Museum would be a bonus. It really is less than its former self when the Armor was there ( use to volunteer there a lot when I was stationed there) but…. some is still there and all the Patton things are too including the vintage WW2 brick buildings are there also the housing. I always wanted to replicate the picture of the PVT The WW2 billets are gone but there is one at the museum. Over all it is a nice drive around the post. From what I understand Palmers Father was a Officer there before the war setting up the Motorcycle school. Matt

New Oxford PA liberation Convoy - 16 Sep 2017

Motorcycle Out Riders needed for Convoy Control!!!!!!

Like it says above, this is YOUR chance to USE that restored Indian, Harley, Matchless, BSA, Triumph, or German MC for Convoy Duty!!!! You can help “herd” about 50 vehicles, including Armor on South Central PA roads!

We do NOT get too many chances to ride like this in the USA, (Yellow lining past a WWII Military Vehicle Convoy is a real BLAST!!) so those of you who talk about getting the bikes together and using them Here is your chance!!

Stop talking about how much fun you can have on a WWII Motorcycle just come out and PLAY!!

Contact me for any info you need about this event, or questions you might have!

Thanks,
