G519: the restoration begins....

Post by Robbby84 » Wed Jul 27, 2016 4:40 am

Hi everybody,

after some time we decide to start the restoration of our last acquisition: a Westfield Columbia G519

Unfortunately some parts are still missing but I hope to find them in the future....
Up to now we start with complete cleaning and a protective coat of red oxide paint
I've already found a Torrington handlebar, a lateral kickstand, front Delta Winner headlight but sill missing seat (Mesinger? Troxel or???), rear red reflector and Uniroyal tires...
In Europe is not so easy to find out parts for this king of bikes

Here's some pics
Any help or suggestions will be appreciate!
Thank you
Rob

Nice! looks like you've got one correct fender. I'll check to see if I have any spare parts for you.

Do you think that one of the two is not correct?
Why? :?

On the front one I found the correct holes for the headlight...and the rear one seems to be correct also but maybe I miss something

Great porject and the really rare parts are there...

Rear fender is not correct, should be gothic like the front one...

For a seat, get in touch with bergerwerke.com ; he sells NOS original seat frames... You can build from there
He also sells repro handlebar grips...

Pedals and chain turn up on Ebay regularly... You need Torrington #8 pedals and 1" skip tooth chain

If you need rear brake parts, check ebay for Morrow eclipse axle parts

Original tires were US Royal Centipede... Check out http://www.ebay.com/itm/U-S-Royal-Chain ... 2059280181

These are what I used on my latest resto job here:

When you start searching for a 1'' pitch Skiptooth chain make sure it is either a ''Duckworth'' ( with outline of a duck on each connecting link ) or a ''Baldwin Duckworth'' ( with B-D USA on each connecting link ) . These are the two that I know of, which were used on these bikes. Also since your bike has a later 1942 frame it would be appropriate to use Torrington #8 pedals with rubber rather then wood blocks. However, if the date code on your rear eclipse brake hub is 1943 ( M followed by 123or4) then your bike may not have been completely assembled until 1943 in which case wood pedal blocks would also be appropriate. The 1942 hub date code would be L followed by 123 or 4.

Regards,
Bill

Thank you Johan for your kindly reply
I know very well your site, very usefull also for the restoration of our WLA 8)

I have already found the left Torrington #8 pedal with rubber blocks, also because the surviving right one is a #8 Torrington

Hi guys

the restoration continues very slowly because I have to provide parts directly from the State. Here in Europe is quiet impossible to find out spare parts for G519 bicycles...

But anyway here's the current situation:

I decided ( up to now) to maintain the incorrect rear fender...but maybe in the future I'll buy a correct gotich one
I have provided a DIAMOND chain and still waiting for the connection links from the States.
New PERSON seat, not perfect for G519 but very similar and cheap :D
New Uniroyal chainlink tires on it and everything has been mounted after cleaning and checking.

I'm still waiting fender brackets and after that I'll be ready for a test ride!!!

Great job...

BTW the tires are U.S. Royal, not Uniroyal...

As for fender braces... If you can't locate any originals, a couple of these could be used to make replacements...
