This is covered on page 58 of the 2nd edition.
Thanks for that great update. I've edited the two posts. More books to buy!

Did the numbers add up on the 808 plate?

That must be a near impossible plate to find as an original!

I saw one of them nos on ebay a wile ago problem is there is not a big demand for them due to the fact no many guys are doing the early WLA'so it's so hard to find the early parts to do a correct 41WLA restoration as we watched 45Lib trying to put his machine together.

It's a pain in my A$$ trying to get a mid type III done right.

It's easier to do a 40WLA then to do a 41 due to the lack of military parts on a '40..
Basically, it's just a shiny green civilian bike with cut out fenders..
Then again: try finding a genuine 40WLA motor...there were only 400 produced..
Still, I would love to do one someday and make my collection more complete

Hello to all
Just found a 3531-42M data plate. It appears original but also appears to be made of copper or at the least red brass. Anybody know what is going on here? I know in palmers book he states some early plates were made of copper but only 40/41 years. Working on a pic to share.
His book makes no mention of the small zinc plate which references the Snl-g-523(as posted by oz). I’ve seen a couple of those now. So, guessing there’s more info yet to be discovered outside the book?

The plates were copper or brass yellow-red material made until about Mid 1943 when the US Government restrictions came in and the tags were switch to a zink-aluminum material.

Palmers books doesn't state this about the tags, but even the early WLA's had some brass construction and was suspended and changed over to steel construction mid 1943.

No more brass rear fender hing pin, tool box lock body and hinge pin, I believe the ignition switch body, brazed frames and forks and other items made of brass even the US penny's in 1943.

That's a real brass plate tag! red rust on it.

The silver painted high lights on the brass tag plates was only done on the originals, the reproduction they didn't do that as I know of?

One other thing on the original brass plates tags the lettering fonts are nice and crisp and not jagged or rough as found on the reproductions.
I believe they used a loss wax process? were they silk screen the lettering on the plate and them use a acid wash to achieve the image on the bass and paint it.
This is done today as well but as said the lettering is not as sharp on the reproductions as are on the originals done.

What do you guys think of this unfinished plate. It has no edges and no hole? Is it original?

This is my plate on the bike. Looks very similar. Should be original.

Looking at the outer shape of the unfinished data plate, it seems to be an unfinished reproduction plate.
