You have to bend it out of the way far enough..
I understand. Is it possible to show a few images of your bike indicating where the two clips are attached and how far from the chain to bend it?

Thanks

One clip is secure to the sprocket cover housing stud were the clutch arm is mounted to and with the other clip is secure under the kicker spring stud.

The best way to test to see if you have a issue with the chain hitting anything is to spin everything around by hand by spinning the rear wheel up in the air and make sure the chain is at the right tension. I like to do it with the rear stand down with rear wheel off the ground.

I see so many chewed up used sprocket covers because the old timers never check the chain tension and just kept adding oil or grease to the chain.

Just makes me wonder if they were just too lazy to tighten the chain up?

Oz,

That NOS rear chain oiler tube is factory pre bent so it's fairly easy to install.

Craig found this.

Thanks Craig :P

QUote from that site "I had the honor of chatting with a true restoration expert today and he told me the clips are different in that the mounting holes are a different bore size in the two clips. He also said the forward clip mounts to the front rear chain guard bolt."

Nice one Oz..
Bought another spare engine lately; only 70 higher up the row than yours Oz..which also makes it a Type V made in the 3rd week of February 1944.
If added it's data to Yahoo's list.
For now, I'll just rebuild it.
But I still have a lot of spare parts....not enough to build a complete bike, but who knows?
Maybe I'll add a Type V to my stable someday..

Would love to see some images when you are able. I've often thought of doing the same. It makes a nice addition to a display or just collection WLA parts. Perhaps you can begin assembling all of the oter items for a Type V :P The search is on!

Thanks for fixing that Oz, Wasn't home at the time to look at mine. I do have mine mounted to the chain guard hole and spring stud as you have fixed photo to the correct
positions on the picture.

17thAirborne wrote:The number in the TM (early war edition) Is different from that on the bag, so perhaps this goes to the discussion of the flat vs rounded head knob. (Flat being for the Type V and round for IV and earlier)Palmer lists it as Speedometer Lamp Knob No. 4556-39N Type II with Screw. The bag has a different number, perhaps a change in the designation.
The bag has a different number because it is a kit which includes knob 4556-39N type 2 and screw #4558-43. Both the October 1943 and September 1944 Ordnance Supply Catalogs list the kit and specifies its contents as knob 4556-39N and screw 4558-43.

The index of Palmer’s Second Edition military book lists page 185 for WLA rear chain oiler mounting. It also lists the rear chain oiler mounting for the ELC and military Big Twin Side Valves (BTSV).

Great thanks for pointing that out. I am glad to add it to the mix of parts for the restoration in a few years.

Installed the muffler, set the timing, tightened everything up and she runs. The muffler was a hassle as the hangars are not original and don't mesh nicely (fix later). Had a small fuel leak at the tank, removed and reinstalled the fuel line and all was well. It took us a while to adjust the timing as my marks from before we disassembled did not seem to work. We started from scratch with the timing mark in center of inspection hole, had to back off one tooth on the distributor shaft and voila. She fired right up.

Did not have time to go through two full heat cycles, I was just happy to get it running. On the next and final visit we will verify everything, run through two heat cycles, tighten everything and bring her home. Here is the link for the engine running. You'll see a bit of smoke from oil burning off the front pipe and I still need to connect one muffler hangar.

The video can't be seen, it's listed as 'private'...change the settings please.

Nice bike Oz, congrats, now for the final few steps: get her roadlegal and have fun with it!
Please don't just "trailer-queen" her!
