1942 G519 Huffman, a new project

Post by Johan WILLAERT » Tue Jun 11, 2013 12:21 pm

Just wanted to share my latest project which is a 1942 Huffman US Army issue bike.

I purchased this off a G member several months ago, but only arrived home this week...

The original finish is still there and I intent to semi-restore this bike keeping as much of the original finish as possible, and replacing broken or missing parts wherever necessary... In the past few months I have gathered most of the parts to complete it, but I still lack a rear fender, headlight, chainguard and kickstand...

Front hub is marked Eclipse as it should and bears traces of OD paint, as do the spokes...
Front wheel nipples seem to be brass...

Johan
What style of fender are you looking for. Smooth or peaked.

Hi Craig,

Although I have observed a peaked Westfield Columbia type fender on at least two Huffmans (one being yours), I would prefer a standard round Huffman type to match the front fender... A peaked one would do for the time being though...

Thanks!!

What kind of handlebar grips would go on this bike???

Coke style??? Or other??? I believe the pointy style would have been used on the 1943 Huffman...

I would go with the Black coke bottle style grips. The Portrayal Press reprint of the Columbia Military Bicycles Parts List and Service Manual show the Huffman equipped with the coke bottle style grips.

Bill

Thanks Bill, Yes indeed the manual shows those...

But this is also a 1942 with other grips...
Similar to those on Craig's women's MG...

Johan,
In the TM 10-1481 manual, it lists the handle bar grips as Textile #43. I'm assuming that would be the OD plastic grips.
