building a new central tire inflation system for dukw

Post by fahtal » Thu May 18, 2017 4:57 am

Hi there,

I wanted to make my dukw complete again. as stated in another topic i am missing the airpump and the hubs with the pipes/pline to the hull. the rest i have.

But after some research i am not sure if i will be happy with the old ctis. if a line comes of or some fittings are leak you will end up with an flat tire.

so i am looking around for some other possibilities.

this "hub" has 2 lines one for regulating the pressure inside the tire, and a small one to open the tire valve. So i you want to inflate or deflate the tire the little line opens the valve. When you run in to something and a line comes off you don`t have an flat tire.

Ok it looks horribly modern But i think i can camouflage that.

What do you guys think and is there someone with experience in this field?

some pictures of original dukw ctis(not my dukw)

Nice photos' but did you ever consider putting on the CTIS equipment and NOT using it to air up and down the tires (maybe in the future you will want it to work)
Bottom Line: you don't use the system that often if you use your DUKW on boat ramps and hard beaches, so unless your planning on invading a marsh or soft sand beach, perhaps just inserting valves in the stem ends and leaving the CTIS for future restoration is the way to go VS. spending money, time, effort at fabricating a new system.
If I were redesigning the truck, I'd look to the M35A3 Deuce and see if the hubs would be able to refit onto the DUKW (possibly needing different bearings, and complete brake changeover with several mods to attach hardware) This way you would have an "engineered" system that the military found hardy enough to put into action, and some replacement parts in the Surplus World for the M35A3 which had a relatively short lifespan within the Army.

That or HUMVEE CTIS, 5T M939 series CTIS, could possibly be refit.

I doubt I get much chance to use my CTIS if I ever do get around to restoring my DUKW.

PS: I wonder about using 9:00 x 20's on 5T rims, VS 18's not sure how bad that would effect the DUKWs performance. WAW

Hi there thanks for your input.

The local river has been revised by the state... Dutch people and water management.... so al the beaches are really soft. Thats why i am looking for the ctis update.

Today i got some prices 250 euro for a hub. And 100 for the valve....

I have to rethink the need. Also i will look info your suggestion.

Hi fahtal,

I know it has been a few years since your post about building a new central tire inflation system for your DUKW, I'm just wondering how you went with that project?

Cheers,
Paul

It stopped...

I think it is still possible. But the investment is quite high. And I think I would loose soon hp to keep the compressor going.
