L134 engine for sale. Sold

Post by Bart1015 » Thu Sep 14, 2017 6:58 am

Hello guys/gals,

I have been going through some extra parts I have in order to slim down my storage needs.

I have a civilian L134 chain drive block, it is a running engine, appears rebuildable.

The casting number is 641087-l-w1-an1-cr-n2. The SN stamped above the water pumps is U96007, it has a early CJ head.

The engine came out of a barn find CJ. The Jeep was bought and the engine was pulled for a V8 transplant. It was not run prior to pulling it. I have had it for about 5 years.

I cleaned it up, mounted on my test stand. I oiled the pistons, primed the oil gallery, and it fired up.

The good:

- It is a runner, no weird noises.
- its clean and painted
- Has great oil pressure, 15+ at idle, 45+ above idle (using a calibrated gauge, the filter is bypassed)
- Has a Ford water pump (it needs rebuilding, it drips, but not all the time)

The bad:

- The engine smokes during acceleration and it smokes a lot during decompression.
- Has an oil leak between the front mounting plate and block, just below the water pump.
** I am willing to bet at least one piston ring is stuck, or it needs new valve guides. **

Notes:

A warm compression check shows #1-80, #2-80, #3-90, #4-90.
Oil pressure is very good, I bypassed the filter for the initial run.
I have not adjusted any valves or done any other adjustments. If you come over your welcome to run any other tests or adjustments.

The engine is still on my stand and I can show any potential buyer that it is a running unit. I need to free up the stand, so if you want to see it running, please contact me.

The engine will be sold as a long block. This includes the following: Block, Water pump, Head. I am looking to get $250.

I live in Santa Rosa, Ca

I can deliver this to Tower Park next weekend for an additional $50.

Wouldn't a 641087 block have been a gear drive?

Fortyeight2a,

You would think so, but this one has the rivet on the chain cover. I believe the early 641087 blocks were chain, at least that is what I read on the net somewhere (I searched to the end of the internet when I saw that rivet).

I have a late war engine (Jun '45) and its chain drive but has a serial number boss above the water pump and a boss behind the oil filter. Must have been several things being changed around that time. Boss behind the filter has a serial number (MCXXXX or NCXXXX?) stamped into it.

641087 blocks were made for gear drive, but chain drive could be easily retrofit during rebuild.

All factory built 641087 engines were gear drive except for a short run in '48 when they were built with chain drive due to a camshaft shortage. August 31 '48 Willys Service Bulletin:

"In order to keep our production lines going in the face of a curtailed supply of camshafts for our engines, it was necessary to use 2,355 chain driven camshafts. These parts are the same as used in our engines prior to the adoption of the gear drive."

Your engine, U96007, is from a '49 4-63 Utility vehicle (Station Wagon, Panel Delivery, etc), so most likely retrofit with chain.

So that means his engine is super-special and extra rare, right? :D

OK, so it might be a retrofit. Guess we can call it super rare... Or just an odd combination.

I really don't need to be further "educated" about this engine. The engine is taking up space that I need for something else.

So, does anyone want to make an offer on the engine?

Good price. To far away. All good deals seem to be on the west coast.

JD136,

Check with Fasenal, https://www.fastenal.com/en/22/3pl-(thi ... logistics). They ship at surprisingly low rates. I can strap it to a pallet and bring it to their store (Santa Rosa Ca, 95401).

I would be willing to help with shipping costs by lowering the price of the engine.

Send me a PM if interested.
