1969 CJ5 for sale

Postby Cargovoyage » Sun Dec 19, 2010 6:54 pm

Looking at buying this 1969 CJ5. They body is original and rust free. 225 V6 runs strong. Speedometer doesn't work. Some cheesy aftermarket gauges were placed which do work. Steering feels loose. Brakes are very very weak. I am assuming this is normal for this vehicle? The owner is asking $7500. I know it is difficult to place a value on these vehicles but I was going to offer $5500 figuring it needs a few thousand to get it in great shape. I really know military jeeps better so I would appreciate any advice? Thanks!

Looks nice. Remember tho, that the components that make it a V-6 are a lot different and not common with the 4 Cyl at all, and are therefore more difficult to come by. The Steering Gear for the V-6 model is heavier duty than the 4 Cyl models, the bushings are same as M-38/M-38A1, not sure if sector shafts are available though.

A lot depends on the quality of parts and workmanship used in the modifications. The V-6 was not an offering in 1959. So it would help to know exactly what V-6 was installed, how the front mounts were fabricated, what tranny was installed and etc. The transfer is probably a single stick late 20 unit and the windshield is a 69 to 71 windshield. I can see a 4 speed pattern on the tranny knob. The optional T98 and T18 didn't fit the stock floor tranny cover so it must be a later 4 speed. There were several options for V6 headers and exhaust. You won't like that exhaust outlet below the door. It would be nice to see an underhood, under dash and under frame set of photos to form a more informed opinion on value.

Hey Cuz, it is an original 1969 not 59. The V6 is factory but was totally rebuilt some time ago. You are correct the shift knob is incorrect. I think it is an original T-14 3 speed unit. It has a single stick transfer case.

V6 was factory in 69. Looks like a pretty nice jeep. A close inspection underneath and the frame area around the steering box is needed.
5k would be good if it checks out clean. The headers are still available fron Advance Adapters (get any new ones ceramic coated). Off road the mufflers could get damaged.
Clean CJ5s are getting hard to find.

I believe by 69 the CJ-5 may have had the gas tank at the rear. T-86 was the 3 Speed that was installed on the V-6 Option as the T-90 was not rugged enough. SSome later V-6 Jeeps used the T-14 Transmission.

The gas tank is under the driver's seat. The seller was hoping to get 6500-7500. I was going to offer 5500 since I need to put about a grand into it between new tires, brake upgrades, gauges restoration. Also it has no rear seat. Did they not have rear seats? Can I buy one?

The suspended Accelerator Pedal is correct for a "factory" V-6).

I'll try to decipher it tonite. May have to do it using engine code. I have stored many of my manuals on the CJ after 1968 but do have the data to determine the year of the engine using the engine build code.

I beleive 69 still had the tank under the seat. As the two 69s I scrapped out did.
With the body change in 72 all were in the rear.
Go with minimum 11 inch brakes and front discs are even better.
Complete conversion kits are available, use the thicker rotors.
