ID CJ5 year built

Post by old stuff » Thu Nov 24, 2016 6:43 am

Data plate on left side firewall: 8305 015 261676, F134 engine sn 4J504823B. I have not been able to find a list of sequence numbers to date this CJ5, I believe it's either a '68 or '69. Any help is appreciated.

Using a copy of "Illustrated Buyers Guide JEEP by Jim Allen, according to his info in the book, 8305 refers to a CJ-5 jeep built between 1964-71. 5th digit refers to it being a Universal, 6th digit refers to it being left-hand drive, 7th digit refers to it as being an F-134 with emissions. Now on the engine, he has listed that four-cylinder engines to 1967 began with "4J" followed by a sequential serial number. He does not have the serial numbers for the year built listed though. Going by the engine if it the original to the jeep and the above info on the engine code, somewhere between 1964-67. If it has the windshield wipers mounted on top of it, 1967 was the last year for the CJ-5 to have them mounted there. They were moved to the bottom on 1968 models. Again, windshields can be swapped out between models also. Hope this helps.

And you can get an idea if the fuel tank is at the rear.

I'm the 3rd owner from the new vehicle purchaser, and believe it is 100% stock. The Original owner's son says that the only thing ever done was repaint. Fuel tank on side, missing sn label on inside dash, hood markers are reflectors only, no electric. I've seen some sequence number lists that would indicate from other numbers close to this one that it's probably Sept--Nov '69. The engine is stuck and has been since I got it. It's on my "Project List". I'll have to check on the location of the wipers.
