Timing pointer
Which CJ would have the notched crank pulley and pointer on the front for engine timing? Did CJ2's have this or the peephole and marks on the flywheel?

Re: Timing pointer
I was started with the 3a's when they changed starters sn 30974. It covered the hole where you could see the timing marks on the flywheel so the pointer was added

Re: Timing pointer
The CJ-3A used the MZ-4137 and MZ-4162 Starter that had a push rod thru the firewall, the block was altered that covered the timing hole, Flywheel went to 124 teeth on the first CJ-3A's in late 1948. The Indicator (Pointer) was not introduced at that time as the Timing covers were market with a stamped line or raised mark on the Timing Cover. and the notch was introduced on the cover. At some point in the 50's CJ-3A, CJ-3B's and CJ-5's the Timing Indicator (Pointer) was introduced. It had a couple of Part Numbers, the latest was 906113. I will try to look up yje earlier number over the weekend. The Notched Pulley works with the stamped and raised mar covers as well as the later 50's engines with bolt on Indicator (Pointer). Perhaps Sean Collins can list the earlier number for the indicator.
I included the extra stuff on the starter, etc., for whatever it's worth.

Re: Timing pointer
In Bob W.'s 3a book he has timing marks moved to the timing gear cover around sn 46332/46358(1950)without pointer which was not optimal because of width of the raised rib but easier than looking through hole. Another change was made at sm 3j 131822(1952) which had 2 marks indented in cover for TDC and 5' before TDC to better line up with notch on pulley but no mention of the pointer so it looks like it never was standard on the L heads. It is mentioned on the F heads during reassembly to install the cover and indicator. Like Ben said any gear driven engine could have the pointer installed. I made one for mine which has a Utility engine with 97 tooth flywheel. Set at TDC.

Re: Timing pointer
I have a feeling that the late 52 CJ-3A's that were being sold as 53's may have the Indicator. The latest CJ-3B/CJ-5 Part Number for that Indicator 906113 also indicates it is installed on the DJ-3A. Can't find my late CJ-3A parts Manual to look up the Indicator Part No.

Re: Timing pointer
Don't know what the part numbers are for any of these (all but 1 will enlarge)
CJ pointer:
As installed. Note it hugs the cover close. Only suitable for double-groove pulley:
M38/A1 pointer? (not sure it's correct for them):
I got one to use on my CJ-2A engine, but it DOES NOT WORK. Made for a larger diameter pulley, w/different offset, and interferes with governor belt. That's why I made my own DIY.
Timing covers: don't know which came first, but only made for gear drive engines. Believe these only work with the smaller diameter pulley, and not suitable for single-groove.

Re: Timing pointer
I recently tried to install a pointer (probably from a CJ3B) on a 2A cover and it wouldn't work. There was not enough room between the bolt holes and the body of the cover for it to fit. I used a 3B cover and didn't need the pointer. BW

Re: Timing pointer
I wonder if it was a chain drive cover? I believe they were a bit different.

Re: Timing pointer
The covers are different in that the chain drive has a tab inside the timing cover that the cam shaft spring loaded plunger runs on.
Not my art.
The gear drive does not. Both can be seen in Sean's pictures as well.

Re: Timing pointer
The peg for the Chain type camshaft does not prevent installing the timing pointer and a later CJ pulley.. I have at least 3 type Timing indicators made for the 4 Cyl Jeep Even have some for M-38/M-38A1 which do not show up in factory parts lists nor the SNL's. I had them hanging on my tool board in the AM Jeep package, they have wandered off somewhere.
