CJ2a transfer case woes
Discovered i was wrong in assuming the Spicer transfer case was basically the same as in an early M38A1. The gear teeth are heavier in the A1 transfer case. Who would have thought.......~ Scott ~

Re: CJ2a transfer case woes
Maybe by the time the M-38-a1 came along, the engineers decided the a1 nor it's civilian counter part would not be pulling a plow ??

Re: CJ2a transfer case woes
All the Universal Jeep, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-5, MB/GPW M-38 and M-38A1 Transfers are Spicer 18 Family.
MB/GPW and early CJ-2A had 3/4" Intermediate Shafts, after that the transfers progressed thru 1-1/8" to the 1-1/4" Intermediate Shafts.
The M-38 and M-38A1 Jeeps share Intermediate Shafts, gears and basic case with later CJ-2A and the CJ-3A Transfers having the 1-1/8" Intermediate shafts. One must be fluent in identifying Spicer and Jeep transfer case Part numbers and confirming the tooth counts, if you can't do this, you are licked. It requires having access to the Universal Jeep service and Parts manuals as well as the Army TM's and SNL's. There is little in the earlier CJ 2A and MB Transfer (3/4" Intermediate shaft) that is interchangeable, same goes for the late 52 and up CJ-3B and CJ-5 Model 18 Transfers having the 1-1/4" Intermediate shafts.
FYI,
There is no Early/Late M-38A1 Transfer Case, the differences between M-38 and M-38A1 Transfer Case are basically related to the parts composing the Parking Brake (rear output bearing cap, brake drum, etc.
