Carter 596S Throttle Body (Body Flange) Swap?

Post by Chuck Lutz » Tue Jan 19, 2010 8:55 am

If Frank Berg does not need this Throttle Body (got first right of refusal on it) for his Agri-Jeep or EARLY CJ2A, then I would like to swap it for a 539S Throttle Body...This one will need to be bushed I would imagine and I would expect a "407" marked one to need it in return. The one for the 596S is marked "458" on the gasket face.

The Carter sheet calls it a "Body Flange" and other sources call that the Throttle Body....I guess I should too.....

Anyone need one of these to build your complete 596S Carter?

I might have some of the other parts unique to the 596S as well if needed.

Email me if you do....

OK...after cleaning out the carburetor shelf to get some 539s rebuilt, I find I have TWO of those Flanges for the CJ-2A 596 carbs. One is really nice with the throttle linkage still attached and in VG condition and the other has the throttle linkage attached but it is pitted. Both have the "458" on the gasket surface and the correct throttle linkage for this model.

I think a factory resto early CJ-2A would use this carburetor and I am sure someone here knows how long Willys used this one before going to the Carter 636 series, but I think the change to the 636 series was in mid 1946 +/-?

Anyway...if you are doing a factory restoration and want to build yourself the correct Carter, this would be a good place to start. I'll swap for a 539 flange with the "407" stamping on the bottom if it is in the same condition and can be bushed and rebuilt.

Any takers?

Just back at home, will send pics today of the better of the two "458" flange bodies with throttle linkage.
