FS 1945 Converto T6 restored trailer

Post by Ern Stacey » Sun Sep 24, 2017 9:00 am

Rare 1945 Converto T6 1/4 ton trailer for sale. The trailer has been fully restored in the Lusterless Navy Gray color. When restoring I took considerable time to sand down through layers of paint to find and retain what original markings were on the trailer. Once the markings were uncovered I took measurements and used onion skin paper to trace the markings to get them back in the original spot once the trailer was restored. After working down to the primer I sand blasted to bare metal before priming and repainting.
I purchased the trailer from the wife of the original owner who had passed away. The original owner was an engineer with the Navy Department when he purchased it in 1947. Like most of these trailers he removed the back panel and turned it into a tailgate. But like a lot of people he did not cut the Lunette but built a bracket using it for pulling with a ball mount. The trailer is very straight with very few dings or dents, and has minimal waving in the floor. There was just surface rust here and there due to the fact it was stored most of the time in his garage. I replaced the rear panel, but did not make it water tight, using small metal straps bent in a L shape and spot welded to floor and panel, (I have pictures if you would like to see them). After sand blasting I put 2 coats of Automotive grade etching primer on the bare metal with 4 coats of Gillispie Lusterless Navy gray over the primer.
The trailer had quite a few original parts on it when purchased. These include

Body and frame
Axle, hubs and backing plates along with all hardware
Thin Lunette
Lunette casting, swivel and landing leg
1 original chain with TP-2 in wedge and TH in cast hook
Both CB tail light covers---buckets were rusted through
4 KD# 333 reflectors with 4 holes
Original shocks
Brake Handle which is unique for this trailer
All original cable and hardware to brakes
Tail light mounting brackets

Non original parts purchased to restore this trailer include

Combat rims and tires
Cloth Covered wiring harness (purchased from Ron)
Blackout light switch (NOS)
Trailer to Vehicle cloth covered plug and wiring (4 wire NOS post war)
Light Buckets (NOS)
Gray Canvas cover and ropes (Beachwood canvas)
1 Early M100 trailer chain with cast hook TP-2 on wedge and a stamped TH in hook (do not believe it is from factory)
Beachwood protective cover made out of heavy vinyl to protect trailer while in storage in garage

Since restoration this has been kept in garage with cover on it, except when taken to shows and pulled behind the jeep.
Asking $2000 or Best Offer that is reasonable. Please PM me if you would like to see more pictures.

Anyone contemplating owning an original WWII trailer should pay attention here....the cost of the bolt-on parts these days is pretty high. Add the rims, tires, BO switch, handbrake, landing leg, lunette, taillight buckets, reflectors, harness, paint, bearings ad sandblasting to the cost of a candidate you find elsewhere that will still cost from maybe $900 to $1200 and you can exceed the cost of this one without your sweat equity involved.

Hey, you can always paint it OD if that's your thing, but that won't cost ya much....this is a VERY reasonable price in my estimation.

I agree with chuck, a bargain price for a nice wartime trailer. I am in the process of re painting and refurbing a trailer. I have spent 100.00 for paint and primer, probably another 20-30 in materials, tires, tubes 300.00. Brake cable 100.00. Tail lights and reflectors, 150.00canvas cover 100.00. Etc.

I have no idea why this has not sold yet. Its a great looking trailer at an awesome price. If I was not several states away this would be mine.

Good luck with your sale.
