1950 Mitsubishi ¼-ton jeep trailer now SOLD

Post by Fred Coldwell » Sat May 13, 2017 5:12 pm

For Sale is one 1950 Mitsubishi ¼-ton jeep trailer that is a nearly identical copy of a WW II Bantam or Willys ¼-ton jeep trailer. This trailer has a thin neck lunette, Bantam style tow chains, wedges and hooks with “FIJI” on them, a MBT style landing leg with 3-position swivel, a hand operated parking brake, a Japanese blackout light switch, 4 stamped rope ties per side, two rope ties up front and one in the rear, a floor drain in the right rear corner, a fixed rear panel and 3 hole spring hangers. It has postwar wiring with a 4 prong WW II trailer plug, late WW II Yankee brand US Army taillights, and 4 round reflectors. Old Goodyear All-Service NDT tires are mounted on postwar slotted wheels. The floor and body panels are all very straight with only one small rusty area and very minor scratches, if that. The spot welds from original assembly are visible around the top rail, as they should be. Given its excellent original condition, this will be an easy restoration. With one minor rust repair and fresh paint this trailer will show very well.

It has a clear Colorado title as a 1950 Willys utility trailer using a Colorado-assigned VIN. The Colorado license plate is current. A faded blank Willys data plate is riveted to its front panel, but the trailer comes with a brand new Robert DeReuter Willys MBT data plate with the assigned VIN and a 1950 DoD stamped on it. Once installed, this new data plate matches the clear Colorado title and should make inspection and registration in your state very easy. It also comes with the Colorado assigned VIN sticker to install inconspicuously, if necessary.

The trailer is painted in grey primer and has one small rusty area in the floor’s left rear corner. Repair that area, scrub down and touch up the primer, paint the trailer with lusterless or semi-gloss olive drab paint and it will be all ready to tow behind your jeep. It is the perfect companion to a MB or GPW in Korean action markings, or a very convincing “3 foot away” MBT behind any MB/GPW in WW II markings. Price reduced again and is now only $995.00 from former prices of $1,095.00, $1,195.00, $1,395.00, $1,695.00 and $1,950.00 FOB Denver, Colorado. Cash or good funds only, no trades. PM or email me with any questions whatsoever or for further information or photos. Thank you for looking.

Hi Fred....

Does the data plate look like this one:
MBT data plate.jpg
MBT data plate.jpg (94.76 KiB) Viewed 5251 times
By the way gentlemen....I think Fred's price is an out and out STEAL! If you do a KW interpretation it is 100% OK in my book but if you wanted to do a WWII interpretation, only the G529 Gods will ever know...and I would be happy to help you come up with the information you need to do that....You'd need the data plate info (these are Bantam copies so you'd need a Bantam data plate and then you'd need a USA number in the proper sequence for the serial number and DOD we would create for it. Since it is registered with a CO VIN number there is no problem with that AFAIK.

Is it ethical? Its only a problem if you try to pawn it off as "original Bantam trailer" but they are going for close to $3,000 or more when restored so this is is...a STEAL!

Hi Chuck:

Thank you for your kind comments on the 1950 Mitsubshi 1/4-ton jeep trailer I have for sale. Colorado prices typically are lower than prices found on either coast, and I priced the trailer locally even though it is posted for sale nationally. Here is the blank Willys data plate now on the trailer:

Image

The text looks identical to the text in your example, but the fonts are different and the spacing is slightly different between the two data plates. I also got an free extra period "." after the "T" in the trailer model designation. :D

As you mention, the buyer could put the Colorado assigned VIN sticker in an inconspicuous place, such as on the rear of an "A" arm underneath the body were it would be protected from fading while also being out of sight. Show that sticker to your state's inspecting LEO, then after the buyer gets his home state title he can put a Bantam data plate in place of the blank Willys data plate now there. The Colorado assigned VIN sticker would remain the actual VIN for the trailer but would not be visible when standing near the trailer.

Hi Jody:

No, I will not be attending the International Convention in Louisville this year. There are 3 events I look forward to attending most years: the Vintage Airstream Club National Rally, the MVPA International Convention and the Black Hills Run, a 5-day jeep trail ride in South Dakota. Unfortunately, this year all 3 events are scheduled at virtually the same time, all within the same 10 days in June. I can't be three places at once. So I'm driving to the Black Hills Run on the Sunday which is the last day of the convention. I'll also miss the VAC Rally in Oregon going on the same week I'll be jeeping in South Dakota. Such is life anymore.

Still for sale in Denver, Colorado, a very nice postwar copy of a WW II 1/4-ton jeep trailer for those who don't mind a postwar manufactured trailer or for those who own a postwar jeep and want a very nice military jeep trailer to compliment it. Still has all the WW II type military goodies: 4 prong military trailer plug, thin-necked lunette, safety chains and hooks, parking handbrake, proper number of rope hooks, round bezel reflectors, blackout taillights, repro data plate, etc., etc. Priced very reasonably at $1,095.00. Thanks for looking.
