New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
I picked up this little gem last week. The restoration had begun, Every single part was with it including a new M100 (Unfortunately) floor, GCI paint and primer and new 7.00x16 tires and tubes. I'm not sure exactly what it is but what I do know is: Bolt on shock brackets, 10 leaf u shaped springs, no data plate, Japanese stamped serial number on fwd left frame, civilian wheels, solid axle, bolt heads have everything from cherry blossoms to blank. I already finished removing the floor and have tacked the new one in its place, put the carriage under it to make it mobile and ordered new shackles and grease seals for the bearings.

Cool find!!!!! What did it ran you, if you don't mind me asking. Where are you in the restoration? Can you post more pictures? Did it have a brake handle in the front to speak off. I'm not very sure about these foreign copies but I'm sure someone in here might be able to help you identify it with no problem.
Thanks,
Joel

Those are the springs they used on the Japanese rebuilds.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
Your one is very sound looking project compared to the rust bucket I just purchased but they are very hard to come across in any condition here in the UK. I'm tackling one on a very low budget. Thinking of making a floor up for mine out of two cj rear floors if I can find a second to patch together a floor, at least the ribs will look semi correct. You had half a floor in yours I didn't have any. If you were closer I'd been looking for the bit you cut out lol . My body sides need a bit set in all the way round too, I'll have to get pictures up loaded most would say I'm mad.

Those springs with the groove are the 50's design Liggett Spring that Jeep standardized on around late 52-53. They can also be found on some M-416 trailers and CJ-3B Front.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
Your spring looks remarkably like the springs on my trailer which came Japan and was sold off and imported back to the USA...there were no paint differences between them and the rest of the trailer when it was restored which leads me to believe they were on there from Japan....those trailers in my data base identified as having been built in Japan have these springs.
I know no way of determining if Liggett licensed the Japanese to replicate them perfectly to their 10-leaf springs or not and am not aware of any markings on them that identify who made them.

Same springs we had on our 61 Willys station wagon. Parts book lists it as heavy duty grooved.

And Chuck, they are same as front CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B Jeep Springs and Mitsubishi Built Jeeps under license. There is a Jeep connection. Fit MB also.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
And didn't Mitsubishi build Jeeps under license? Liggetts were installed from approximately 1952 thru at least the end of the CJ-5 Universal Jeep in 1971.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
Not at all, I paid $600 USD for it, the new fenders, tires and floor alone would have been more than that! I have the brake handle, mount, lines, stops, lunette and draw bars (stamped 61252), New shocks, chain brackets but no chains. I've got the new floor in and welded in place. Seals and spring bolts have arrived and will tackle this weekend. There was some pitting on the left and front wall, I filled it with Aviation Hi Strength Structural adhesive, Scuffed the surface rust off most of it (had been sand blasted but acquired slight surface rust). Ive primed the draw bars and brackets, shock mounts and applied rust converter to most of the tub. This weekend I'm taking the springs and axle off, flipping the tub and finishing the bottom. I'm hoping to have the axle done this weekend too and re-mounted with the new shackles and bolts. I'd like to have the new tires and tubes mounted up next week.canorisa wrote:Cool find!!!!! Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
The structural adhesive I'm using is about $300 a quart, its REALLY good stuff. I'm using it to fill the holes after i welded up the spot welds. Once I finish welding up the bottom of the floor, I'm using aircraft fuel tank sealant to seam seal the edges so she's water tight again. Its corrosion resistant and will add a little structural properties as well. Lucky i get this stuff for free after its past its best if used by date! Works great on boats, trucks, jeeps and trailers! There was a large dent above the fender brackets, I was able to completely remove it, big hammers can be your friend! My brake cables have very free movement but I'd like to clean up the housings a little before I paint them. I'm really looking forward to having the tires mounted up, then I'll get to see exactly how well the lunette will line up with my Jeeps pintle. Its a lifted 2016 jeep on 35" tires. Unfortunately, the jeep is black and my wife says the trailer has to be black too....All in all, I'm expecting to have about $800 in it when done. All i have left to buy is a few bolts, new wiring harness (12v trailer and jeep lights) and will keep the stock harness in a bag. I'm going to put the black out switch in its proper hole but nothing will be hooked to it.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
Got a lot accomplished this weekend. Floor is completely welded in, shock mounts and spring mounts installed, all primed. Painted the bottom gloss black. Replaced races and 1 bearing in the left hub. axle and springs all primed, brake cable and clamps painted. I think by this sunday, I'll have it all together waiting on final black top coat. Absolutely no markings on the springs. This thing has Got to be a complete Japanese mfg.

Re: New to me 1/4 ton Trailer
I've got to get a bolt for the lunette, it looks like a 3/4"x4" fine thread bolt. I've sourced a replacement here locally in grade 9! I'm also going to attempt mounting the tires and tubes myself. There are very few shops around willing to take the responsibility. I wish I had Combat rims and it would be a no-brainer, just like mounting an aircraft tire. This trailer had been registered before as a 1942 Willys with a s/n of 61252 (number that appears on a draw bar arm) and I've already got a new data plate made. I may change it to the Japanese number that is obvious and marked externally in plain sight. Az is weird about trailer registration and I'm a little unsure how to get it registered if I do that though.
