Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Genuine Willys Lunettes will have the Willys Part Number A-6370, The Bantam Part No. is AMB-14280. That mark may be an ID of the tooling for that individual Lunette. Not all WWII manufactured have the Willys numbers, some have Bantam, some may have a Checker "CC" part Number. If one looks closely at their Lunette, and note on the neck a slight grinding mark about 1" long with a ball shape impression, that is an indication that the Lunette has been selected for a quality control hardness Test. The impression is left by the test ball.
The Hardness specification should be noted on the Willys Factory Drawing for WO-A-6370 Lunette.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
They come in many flavors but an actual "Bantam" part number isn't one of them...
A-6370
QCD B 43
PSC BU 42
841-3
These are some of them for the thin style lunette.
To answer Chance.....the mark you indicate may be the mark of the foundry that made this lunette for Willys.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Thanks Chuck - I was toying with the probability it was a foundry mark as well. I'm curious if we can shake this one out eventually.
Now that I am looking at it again, I wonder if it looks like the 3B after the part number: half-way down more photos viewtopic.php?f=141&t=282888

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Willy's part no. of A-6370 I get, because I've seen it and I find it in the manuals.Chuck Lutz wrote:They come in many flavors but an actual "Bantam" part number isn't one of them...

PSC BU (Two Digit Year) I get, because I've seen it. I have NOT seen it referenced in any publication. Chuck you cite: QCD B 43 & 841-3 as well.
I am wondering then if QCD may be related to the Quad Cities Tank Arsenal (a spin-off of Ordnance Steel Foundry Company, Bettendorf, Iowa).
That also perhaps PSC may be related to Pittsburgh Steel Corporation.
841 I have no guess.
These aren't part numbers that I'm aware of, so perhaps something particular to the foundry at which they were produced?

I have memories from the 70's of NOS in wrappers A-6370 Lunettes a plenty from Sarafans and Bud Werner. Saved one of them for my own MBT.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Actually there are two lunette eyes.
A-6370 for the QMC MB-T
A-6682 for the NOM MB-T This part number has the notation "See drwg. A-6370-C
Not sure of the differences as most of the other parts are the same number... with some exceptions:
Examples
A-6392 Tailer safety chain assy, QMC
A-6688 Tailer safety chain assy, NOM
A-6395 Safety chain eye bolt QMC
A-6774 Safety chain eye bolt NOM
There are other differences... it is late...

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
How "late" for those other parts Mark?
Do you have a date those part numbers would fall into for the NOM?

I meant late in the day for me.Chuck Lutz wrote:How "late" for those other parts Mark?

I have BOM and RC... also Material Surveys that I I tried to go over with you guys at TP long ago... 2011.
The Trailer Cassis BOM I have start at 5-27-42... 8 on the MB-T and QMC & NOM combined.
A sample is this.
Change vary from paint changes to going from 7 to 8 rivets in a location.
Forgot to add... look at what they call the R.C. on each of the above documents... very interesting
See here:
Unlike other BOM that I have the trailer ones are very complex... some only a day apart. There are also some BOM that are hand written, making some items hard to read. I will sort this out when I get some time.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
It would be interesting to see how many G-529s Willys produced without the rear frame crossover in the frame.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
The A-6370 drawing does not contain information on the source of the forging, just the heat treating and machining.

Could the different part numbers for some of the same 1/4 ton trailer parts reflect different paint applied to those parts, i.e., olive drab on the MB-T parts and lusterless forest green on the NOM trailer parts?

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Perhaps a Lunette Exchange list can be posted so that all can swap for the the correct Lunette for their trailer.

Re: Question: WO A-6370 Lunette Casting Identification
Guys,
You all assume that these lunettes are cast. They are not. I have the original print and specification for the manufacture of this part.
They are drop forged, heat treated, and phosphate treated.
