Leaf Spring ID assistance
We recently acquired this trailer & were wondering if these were standard type springs on a 1/4 T Trailer?
Thank you for your help.
Brett

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
Brett, I think these look like 10-leaf springs.
"Willys stopped making the MBT in February 1944 and the 10-leaf spring did not come along until October 1944....8 leaf original to MBT Trailer." Attributed to Chuck Lutz.
Is it a Bantam or MBT, post-war? If the trailer underwent maintenance during its life you could find either 8 or 10 leaf springs on the trailer then.
Any data plates? Chuck has a thread were he is collecting this information here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=72809
I'd encourage you to send what information you have.

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
The WWII 10 Leaf Springs would be the MATHER 10 Leaf WO-A-8463 as installed by the factory on the front of the late MB's The 10 leaf springs illustrated appear to be one of the three styles installed on M-100/M-416. Two of those three types are made by Mather, and by Liggett.

I don't have the contract specifics for the Canadian Contract G-529s, but I think they requested 10-leaf springs.

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
Chance, I purchased this trailer yesterday from a fella who obtained it about 30 yrs ago in Melbourne, Australia. Since then it had sat in a shed. From the information on how to ID a trailer, everything indicates it is most likely a BANTAM, unfortunately the data plate has been removed but the holes remain, we have removed the left front spring hanger & uncovered the ACM # which reads 38280.

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
Hi Brett,
I think you might find those to be Australian army rebuilt springs.
All sets of springs i have seen which have been on jeeps and trailers rebuilt by our army/defence forces had the same type of keepers (wrap around bits) and similar leaves.
Cheers,
Ian.

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
Brett....if you send me the information in MY "How To ID.." sticky I can give you some estimates of the missing info. If you can uncover any US markings that the Aussie forces did not remove that will help quite a bit...even a partial USA number will tighten up any estimate I can give you.
Many years ago Ian was kind enough to send me photos of some Aussie ledgers with trailer info on them so if we can learn a bit from any USA you may find that can be compared to the Aussie info Ian provided and compared to my data. Who knows....we might get lucky and find out some of your missing info...no matter if your intention is to return it to the US configuration or the Aussie configuration!
It is an early 1943 G-529 though....I am of the opinion it was originally sent to Aussie forces rather than obtained from US forces....

Re: Leaf Spring ID assistance
Joel.....what data are you referring to that indicated that at the end of production of the MBT at Willys (actually March 1944) that the trailers sent to the gov't had 10-leaf springs? Generally speaking, even the Bantams made in 1944 did not yet have the 10-leaf springs from the factory. I am of the opinion they showed up at the same time the 10-leaf spring packs showed up on jeeps which I believe is late 1944.
Now springs, axles, lower shock mounts can be swapped around during service and after the war and certainly at depot rebuilds...so the 10-leaf springs do show up on trailers in my data base much earlier than "late 1944" but I have seen nothing from the factory to indicate they made a switch on the MBTs for the gov't to the 10-leaf before stopping production in March 1944.
Owners of G529 trailers can often find 8-leaf springs for their jeeps in much better condition than those they have on their jeep and do a swap.
