Question: Lead Washer Information for Reflectors

Post by Chance » Wed Dec 28, 2016 5:37 pm

I referenced the following in an attempt to gather some details on the lead washers used on the reflectors for 1/4 ton trailers (I have a January 1943 MBT in the event this is relevant):

SNL G-529, TM 10-1281 Dated: 5 July 1945
TRAILER, 1/4-TON PAYLOAD, 2-WHEEL, CARGO, 1942-43
(American Bcrntam T-3 and Willys MBT)

WASHER, lock, reg., S., pkzd., 1/4 in

115109
(AMB-91X6-R)
(W0-53058)
(GM-115109)

This is the only washer referenced for the reflectors, and if I am reading this correctly, this is a steel lock washer. I am surmising this to be the lock washer found on the outside of the tub along with the corresponding nut. The screw head would be found within the tub. I see no reference to a lead washer... I know that there were lead washers but I cannot find it listed. What's puzzling as well is that the TM I am referencing states it is for 1942 - 1943 trailers and was published in 1945.

1. What is the part number for these lead washers?
2. Is there a different manual I should be referencing?
3. Was there a date range in which lead washers were used?
4. What are the specs of the original lead washers? O.D., I.D., thickness, ?

Help here would be much appreciated. I've spent over an hour searching the Gee with no luck.

Mark thank you!

So the washer dimensions are: 17/64" x 1/2" x 1/16". I read this as ID, OD and thickness.

I could not find freely TM 10-1230 as referenced in one of the posts you cited. I did find TM 10-1281 which I believe has a reference of part no. of A-6372 for these lead washers, QTY 8, which is what I would expect.

Further, learning that only MBT trailers used the lead washers.

Bantam used putty as a sealer for the reflector screws.

I used some window glazing putty on my trailer reflector bezel bolts and they didn't leak when we took my trailer out for a boat ride...once it sets up it will probably be good for the next 70 years.

My Gemco T-1 used putty also.
