Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
Finally found a 1941 California trailer plate that the DMV will let me register to the MBT. Now I'm getting motivated to get this completed. Spent some time sanding it down today in 105 degree heat. Good times:

Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
I wanted to use the original tail light brackets, so I ground out a little area on each side of the support bracket on the bedsides. I was keeping the tailgate conversion, but after really looking at it, there isn't a lot of support of the bedside where it was cut for the tailgate. The tailgate would be handy, but am worried that the bedside can be pushed out so easily. I may devise some type of locking plate inside the trailer on each side to secure the bedside to the tailgate when the door is closed. That would provide support at least while the tailgate is closed. Not when open. I'll see how it goes. I can always add a replacement panel to lose the tailgate:

Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
I pulled the hub to check out the internals of the braking system. As soon as I pulled the cover plate, oil just started flowing out. May have been grease at one time, but turned into about 70 weight oil. Everything look pretty bad including the brake shoes:
Shot this photo to document where and how the cam pieces that set the brakes go together. So rugged looking one can barely tell that the pieces are even there:
Well, so much for the scuff and shoot restoration that I thought I was going to do. Now I'm in full on restoration mode. I think I will be replacing just about everything. I just can't seem to stop myself:

Nice Licence plate Zeph. I have been told that the P stands for P= Pneumatic (tires) and the T, i assume stands for trailer. On some of the 30's and early 40's truck plates they were marked P C or S C (Pneumatic Commercial or Solid Commercial) Have you heard of an explanation other than that?

Thanks Roger. Yes, that is what I found out from the CA DMV site. Here's a great link from their site that details out all of the year of manufacture plates and what went with what:rjbeamer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:22 pmNice Licence plate Zeph. Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
Came home this evening and just couldn't take it any longer. Had to hack off the tailgate in the hopes to make this an honest trailer:
Looks better already:
Also finally figured out that the reflector mounting holes are incorrectly orientated. Now will need to figure out the correct location for the four reflector mounting holes.

Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
Interesting in that there is yellow paint under the draw bars and the spring perches. This was rebuilt in Salinas in March 1945. It almost appears that that mayhave been when the trailer was painted yellow. Possible air field duty?
Since I pulled all of the spring perches, I thought I better get a shot of how they were mounted:
Pulled the floor drain plug as well. It was a little worse for wear:
Every bolt that could be removed has been removed. This thing is totally stripped down now:
I will need to figure out if this extra piece of flat stock, that is welded under the bell crank area, is stock. My bell crank bolt is not long enough to fit trough both sections of metal. I may need to take this to FB for an answer. I'm starting to get the sense that no one is interested or looking at these threads any longer. May be spinning my wheels here:

Thanks Stijn!
Just checking to see if it was even worth posting progress photos any longer.
I did find this photo on Jeepdraw that has what appears to be the same plate welded on underneath the angle iron. I guess my shoudler bolt is just too short. I can maybe weld on some thread to allow me to bolt the bell crank on:

I'm reading too Zeph.
I have just been out and checked my Willys trailer that is still being restored (very slowly), and it too has the spacer for the bell crank. It's there so that the J bolt doesn't foul on the floor of the tub. You could get a new bolt here http://www.classicjeepparts.com/en/trai ... e-nos.html But I'm not sure if it's worth it with shipping to the U.S?
Cheers,
Chris.

Here is my contribution.
Still have one trailer frame left, and some parts.
Here is what I found:
Hope this helps!

Hey Zeph...we're watching....
I sure could use the ACM number off the left front spring hanger now that it has been dismantled! I'd guess you will find a "W" above, below, before or behind the actual number which should be around 34xxx or 35xxx plus the elusive "W"....

Hi John,
Here's the underside of the trailer as I found it back in 2011 . . .

Thanks guys, with those photos compared to the Jeepdraw photo, it's obvious that the square plate is supposed to be there, and that the bell crank bolt I have is too short. I will need to lengthen it, or I will need to find a longer one.
Thanks Chris, I bet I can find one in the states now that I know it is too short and if I am unable to modify the one I have.

Re: Zeph's 1943 Willys MBT Trailer
Zeph, I believe the bolt is supposed to be shouldered and has a large thin hex head. I believe Ron had them but if he still does I'm not sure.
