M416 rear unit markings and reflective tape

Post by zoro » Wed Jun 04, 2014 9:00 am

Hey all. I'll be adding unit markings to my M416 and I know some folks have said back in the day there was a strip or two on conspicuity tape on the rear crossmember. When I took the paint off of mine I found the remnants of some long gone reflective strips but just tiny bits and pieces.

Anybody have any good photos of the rear of the M416 complete with unit markings and reflective tape circa 1984?

It was 2" RED SCOTCHLITE and was a result of serious rear end accidents with wheeled combat vehicles. A 1962 fatal accident outside of Ft. Drum, NY involving an M-37 with troops in the rear that was hit by two cars that were drag racing in fog late at night started an investigation resulting in trucks and trailers with the early 6" GI Lighting having Scotchlite applied. An S/SGT from the Maine National Guard was killed and two others in back with him were seriously injured.
Not sure of the spec. but a horizontal and vertical strip were applied at each lower corner. Am guessing the length was 10". It could be found on mules also.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't even planning on putting any on my trailer until I came down my road and the only thing reflecting back were the bolts for the tailgate hinges. I do a lot of night driving and at this time don't have the original reflectors for my trailer but they will be going on at some point.

Was the 2" Scotchlite in addition to the round reflectors for the rear or did those get added at the same time?

The reflectors were standard equipment, the tape was an additional safety measure.

Modern day photo, and obviously the painted markings are not official U.S. Army.

Here is a different reflective tape job. Note the corners of the tub and outside edges of the fenders.

The orange is for sure but the corners of the tub and fenders were masked off. They may have been also but they were right on top of OD paint.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm probably going to use these at a 90* angle on the corners of my tailgate. Super reflective and low-profile

For the unit markings use sand paint for the base, correct?

The Red Scotchlite we used came on a 2" wide roll similar to duct tape.

Did my unit markings today with some off the shelf 4" Tractor Supply stencils. I did go with the 2" Scotchlite on the corners. For good measure I stuck one white piece in the center plus it covers up a few holes.

Also did a stealth application of the Scotchlite tape on the forward facing leg of the landing gear. Can't be seen during transit with the gear stowed but very noticeable when parked.

Next on the list are the OE style reflectors. Since I have it registered as homebuilt it will need one amber and red on each side, 2 red on the rear and 2 amber on the front. They also want the same pattern of lights so I will be adding some 1" LED's to make the DMV happy.

In the 1980's here in England, the USAF used a white reflective self-adhesive tape on the rear corners of their trailers (and other vehicles) I know this because I managed to obtain a part-used roll as a gift when our MV club visited the base.
By the late 90's, the "tone-down" painting and marking policy had been introduced and the tape being used looked almost black in daylight....but reflected very well in darkness. Just sayin..... :D

2" Red Scotchlite reflective tape on the rear of your M-151 and M-416 is bound to be a good conversation piece.

I know this is an old post, I'm just tying up loose ends. This is tape on my recent M416 acquisition. Might be Bubba, might be military. Frame tub is mounted on is from different trailer.
