mite transmission
Decided to have nos transmission and transfer installed to save time instead of rebuilding at this time. I think I should replace oil seals at this time, good idea or not needed? Anyone have napa numbers? Thanks Rod.

Re: mite transmission
Replace any seal that is rubber and has been sitting for any length of time. It's always a good idea

Re: mite transmission
Open it up and and clean it out. I bought two .gov rebuilt diffs and glad I did as there was a some corrosion, very light, on the inside of the aluminum housing. The aluminumoxide will eat bearing up worse than sand. I've noticed it on most NOS and rebuilt M422 parts I've bought over the years. Once it has oil in it, no more worries but clean it out first.

Re: mite transmission
Hey guys I need some advice on the shift mechanism, when I have it in 4 wheel drive and put the shifter in 1st it locks up like in 2 gears at once.I have the body off so I can work on it easier. The Trans makes a lot of noise and gets pretty warm while driving.Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: mite transmission
I recall old threads on this symptom. The reverse shifter fork/shoe has an offset, if flipped the wrong way, the reverse idler gear doesn't fully disengage from the countershaft. The 1st and reverse gears will lock-up. In neutral, the reverse idler gear teeth sit within the large recess bore in the rear of the transmission case. Made this mistake rebuilding 2 transmissions.

Re: mite transmission
Zeeboo,
The pictures in the trans/transfercase manual are helpful. There is a closeup photo of the right orientation. There is a good amount of disassembly to correct if that is the problem....separate the transfer case, and transmission. I removed the transmission's input and mainshaft in order to flip the reverse shift shoe. Double check that reverse lever is indexing correctly to the top cover.
